Quarantine for most arrivals to UK likely to start 1st June 06:15 - May 22 with 2810 viewsElderGrizzly

I’ve been debating this with Mr Calder and a few others over the last week and it is the right policy, but with no surprise, the Govt has got it woefully wrong on timing.

For a Quarantine like this to work, you need cases to be in the low 100s in reality, so you either do it early before a pandemic takes hold or do it late on to allow in-country restrictions to be eased.

We are doing neither of those 🙄

So many questions on this one...

(Selfish ones as am hoping to get to Spain in Sept).

Likely to still be in place then? Any exemptions (France? Spain? Ireland?)

Enforeceable?

I know I am a cynic, but this is going to spiral isnt it?

1. It will be distrastrous for the holiday companies.
2. It will kill off foreign tourism.
3. How will it be implemented? If I quaranteen is it like lockdown, can shop and exercise?
4. The idea that the police will be knocking on doors. And you are out at the shops?....So what happens?
5. It is only 3 months too late if we wish to stop the spread properly.
6. Wtf haven't we been screening visitors? I was screened (temp tested) on all journeys in Nigeria in Feb ffs.

Typical knee jerk reaction that is too late to be effective and will be damaging and the very time the govt is seeking to relax the lockdown.

Also wondering about Ireland. Are they going to check origin of travel? Go to France, ferry to Ireland, drive to Dublin, ferry home. Suspect those routes might get busy...

Who knows mate.

I imagine it will be as well enforced as this supposed lockdown. Half arsed.

Would have been exceptionally sensible in late February. Utterly ridiculous to do it now. Will take a huge proportion of police time to attempt to enforce this or is common sense policing this too?

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Must admit I'm confused as hell. It's out of step with the lockdown activity, which seems utterly pointless. If you need to lock down in entirety then do it in entirety. Seems a bit strange to begin to relax the lockdown and then start to think about quarantining international arrivals. At a time when other countries are getting on top of their infections too, so the risk of infected people coming in wil be getting lower.

And then there are the loopholes, vaguely defined exceptions and almost impossible task of policing this, making it likely to fail anyway.

Maybe there's a perfectly logical reason for starting to look at this over the summer and for the way they're going about it. I don't know what those reasons are though. Seems out of kilter with what other successful countries have done too.

Confused

Yes, it will kill pretty much any travel in or out if the UK and is likely to be 3 weeks initially, before it is loosened, but not removed entirely.

Quarantine rules are much stricter than lockdown. It is don’t leave the address at all, with £1,000 fines if you do. There was talk of using phone tracing to help police it, as well as regular PC Plod.

It is 3 months late for one scenario, but also too early for the other. You need very low cases for it to be effective.

Marina Hyde summed it up quite nicely last week:

"Take the plan to require international arrivals to the UK to quarantine for 14 days, which will start not even now, but at some unspecified point, soonish. This feels not so much like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, as allowing the horse to bolt, then turning to your wife a couple of months later and saying, “Tell you what might look nice: a stable. Let’s get some plans drawn up. I feel like a door might be an idea? We could put it over there — where that horse we used to have used to be.”

Does anyone seriously think the police are going to check up on the addresses given by people arriving at ports of entry? There are about 3 million overseas visitors a month normally, and millions more returning UK residents. Each police officer in the UK would have tens of individuals to be continually keeping tabs on. Not going to happen.

Right now it is about 15,000 a week into Heathrow which is something like 97% down on normal and that number will reduce even more if this comes in.

As I said, they are looking how they can use tech to support it too.

The reality is they will appeal to people to be honest (i know!) and not want to risk spreading anything and causing a further tightening of the lockdown.

The whole thing is a farce though. We were briefed before Bojo’s speech that it included all modes of travel, he then spoke to Macron off his own back and promised he’d exclude Ferrys and Eurostar. This was then retracted 72 hours later again.

China have done something similar for the last month, but they outright banned any foreigners from coming while Chinese citizens were subject to quarantine. They’ve had nearly zero imported cases since.

Right policy, wrong timing and managed by a bunch of morons.

For me, I just don't know why Boris is in serious politics. He has a horrendously complicated private life, he's not naturally a leader or a particularly strong public speaker. He can't be bothered to attend meetings. I think he just sees the political establishment as an exaggerated Eton and he's head boy.
