I’m guessing if Galloway was a Tory prick there would be more people on here would have condemned him.

Galloway is a prick.

I've no idea why a creature which looks appealing on first glance but turns out to be viscious bastard when you dig slightly deeper could do such a good impersonation of a cat.

I was going to post this earlier but I thought I'd wait and see if somebody who swings to the left of politics would do so.

It's no surprise that it was Badger, who is always consistent in condemning racism whether it's from the left, right or centre.

Of course, Gorgeous George has form for this sort of othering.

Always been a bit of a mixed bag hasn't he, even way back.

But at least he then appeared to stand for something, the little guy, the oppressed etc.

I don't know who this Humza Yousaf guy is, not really following politics north of the border up there. So did a little googling. He was born in Glasgow FFS.

It can be anything but race baiting can it? Galloway's weird. Always has been, always will be. He's not the sort of person we should be putting in public service roles. I pretty much switch off whenever he's mentioned tbh, so didn't fully appreciate how much of an arsehole he is.

I don't actually agree with Owen Jones there. I agree that you shouldn't excuse and not challenge authoritarian regimes where they perpetuate human right crimes. But the answer isn't only a democracy. You can have the erosion of human rights and authoritarian actors in a democratic country just as easily (plenty of example around the world, and we're even sliping that way).

I used to do bit of work in Bhutan at the turn of the Century when they had a hereditary monarchy and it worked very well. The ruling was fair and just, everything worked well and the people were happy with how things were (and had been for ages under different monarchs). It was quite an eye opener to see that there can be another way. The transition to democracy from about 2007 on was actually quite traumatic for them and not everyone thought they'd made the right decision.

Bhutan is probably a quite rare example, granted, but it does show that democracy isn't the be all and end all (it's pretty much a sham anyway isn't in - the quirks in the electoral system mean it's not representative and nobody in their right mind would think Corbyn and Johnson were the best two people to run the country out of all 66 million of us).

I used to love listening to Galloway on TalkSport when I was night fishing.

He was always a good listen. Such a brilliant orator.

His performance at the US Senate was incredible, utterly incredible.

Steady on.

I’ll give you Mendoza and Galloway as cranks – even though that’s as much about their edgy and clumsy self-promotion as anything else. But crankery on your own part to lump Jones and Walker into this.

You may not agree with them but they’re as respectable as a Dunt or an O’Brien in the centre. Arguably more so, because they tend to offer a different and important perspective on the standard narrative.

Difficult to tell. Jones has been referred to as a crank or far-left too.

It would do you a lot of good to follow Walker. He’s got his head switched on and isn’t remotely a crank. Also good that Jones and Walker disagree here and you see that the China narrative isn’t some universal truth.

Jone has alwasy struck me as making sure to position himself as centre far-left, if that make sense? I've no problem with him, bar the odd tweet. Walker's a new one to me (have to admit) but I've no idea how he knows what Chinese people all think on this and doubt they're all happy, especially the Uighurs.

There’s nothing particularly radical about Jones in an international politics sense. Problem is that in the UK we tend to see everything through the middle-aged and centre-right lens of our media.

Walker is talking about a country of over a billion that has made massive strides to take hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. I’m not going to pretend that the treatment of the Uyghers or the greater need for democracy in Hong Kong are good by Western standards but there’s a pretty selective approach taken here.

Let’s just say that the people and groups who have suddenly become the most committed defenders of Muslims and democracy aren’t the usual antiracists and pro-democracy activists. In fact, it seems that it’s becomes the right wingers’ cause celebre around about the time that the neoliberals started shifting to an anti-China stance. Yet when Corbyn talked about the oppression of the Uyghers (along with the Rohinga and others) just a bit before that pivot, there was tumbleweed.

I don't think Jones is a crank - the link was to the Walker tweet, it just came up as it was a reply to Jones, who was making a good argument in that exchange.

Until recently, thought Walker seemed like the most sensible of the Novara bunch but to be simping for a genocidal regime by claiming that democratic elections are "abstract ideals of liberal columnists" is a bit ridiculous.

I can't really comment on that specific case as you'll know much more about it than me, but as a general point, the focus surely should be on a transition to a more repesentative and fair form of democracy? In the same way that our system and lack of political talent gave us 2 bad options at the 2019 General Election, a monarchy-led system could also take a turn for the worst but with a leader which the people can't remove without elections.

However, as you alluded to, the worst thing about this tweet is that it's defending a regime that's currently committing a genocide against the Uighur Muslims.

Righto. It’s almost as if there’s a context for thinking our flawed neoliberal democracy hasn’t always been that beneficial as a way of freeing people.

And I prefer that he looks at this differently than your “simping” for the status quo and a narrow world view.

Is it defending genocide*, really? Or are you just saying it is?

I also think you need to be careful throwing around the term genocide. I think there is awful oppression and clear human rights abuses but probably more accurate to call it cultural genocide. And on that score, it’s pretty much exactly how China has been before when we were more than happy to visit and trade with it, not to mention how a lot of our other allies operate too.

Don’t get sucked into some Orwellian narrative here. We should be calling this out across the board – and always, not making a special case just so the right-wingers can push their trade agenda.
