These lads need to grow up and wake up 15:24 - Mar 6 with 1409 viewstractorboy1978

It was like watching a team of boys against men. Dozzell and Bishop weak. The three behind Norwood, totally feeble. Lacked leadership, lacked bite, lacked fight, lacked character. Really, really poor collectively from a side that should have been bang up for that today.

Tiredness? Perhaps complacency? Maybe

The bottom line is that these players have failed time and again. Something not right with their mentality if they can’t perform for a new manager. I think there is quality there but Cook’s biggest job is to get this group competing properly. We completely lost the battle today to a Gills side who were good at what they do. But we make it too easy for opposing teams too often for it to be just an off day.

Good luck Paul!

There just seems a real brittleness about too many of these players. Too many that turn up one week then don't the next. A team that is going to be promoted needs 11 players at 7/10 week in, week out.

And we struggle to react positively to set backs. A real lack of leadership and character for me.

Bit of both, I think. 3 wins on the trot, a whole load of positivity all week, but an opponent that knew what they were about, were ready to get stuck in and at least 10 legs that had a fair few miles in them of late.

I wonder if we went into it expecting to smash them and were surprised at how difficult they made it for us?

Plenty of us have wanted to see a midfield 3 of Bishop, Dozzell & Downes. The first 2 were very poor today; Downes's bite was badly missed against what was always going to be a physical Gillingham. While Town have a ludicrously large squad, we still lack commanding midfield players (Skuse is past it) but have umpteen lightweight passers - at least 11 who have played first team football this season.

I think that’s right. We have good footballers but you don’t get to play football most weeks in this league unless you earn the right first. If the game does not settle into a pure football match, too many of our players are just not prepared to dig in and do the ugly side of the game.

I also don’t like the body language from some of our players. I know not everyone wears their heart on their sleeve but there doesn’t seem to be any obvious leadership or outward displays of anger/disappointment when we lose.

I’m starting to think that the players know they’re not good enough for the championship so are not highly motivated to drive for promotion.

We don't really have commanding players full stop. Our squad have been lightweight in general even going back to Mick's time.

Norwood is obviously physical but has to bully defenders to win balls, Drinan tall but no real presence. The midfield is so small in stature and even our defenders aren't exactly man mountains. The talent is there to an extent but when we can't win games with quality we're never going to outmuscle teams.

Gills bullied us fairly all game and earned the win. We had no answer to it anywhere on the pitch.
Feeble performance all round.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Problem today was we didnt stop them bullying us. We kept trying the same balls. Same phases of play and running into trouble again.

Make space. High tempo movement you give them no chances to get tight to battle you off the ball.

We also have a team of sugerpuffs. How many 50 50s did we pull out. Having so many previously Injured players dont help they bottled everytime.

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

Cannot believe it could be complacency today. If there was a day every player should have been up for it it was today. I suspect the biggest problem is a mental one and it will take a few weeks/months for Cook to work on that.

Tiredness?? Do me a favour. If they are suffering from that and the opposition aren’t, it’s time to give up.

As you say, best of luck with that lot Paul.

Gillingham played a combination of 1990s Wimbledon (lump up the park) and Stoke from 10 years ago (Rory Delap long throw) and Town had no real idea how to cope - the defence was all over the place.

However, the most annoying thing for me is the number of daft challenges resulting in free kicks around the box - it led to Gillingham's first goal today. Dozzell was never winning the ball from behind the player.

Whilst you are right, the biggest thing is they lack quality.
