Pubs 12:10 - Mar 22 with 2396 viewsgtsb1966

who has actually missed the pub. Every Saturday night I would be out without fail but looking back I haven't actually missed it as much as I thought I would. The only thing I've missed is having the choice. Having said that I've actually spent more money since last March drinking at home than I did when the pubs were open.

Don't think I've missed it as such but if the beer gardens are open when the euros roll around, that's where you will find me, can't imagine a big football tournament without all dayers with the lads.

All being said I feel like I've forgotten how to socialise

It's like you say, not the going but the freedom to choose. I have spent more at our local on takeaway food and drink in the past 12 months than I would if I was just going, but I'd hate to think of it being closed down forever (GK would probably love it: more real estate to sell off), and the people there being out of work.

Like others, I miss the balmy nights in the beer garden - rather than going t'pub routinely. That said, the pubs in the village here are an important part of the community, and the way pubs used to be back in the day. You have your regulars, sitting around pissing and moaning and having the time of their lives doing it (much like on here)

I do hope the pub trade sees a boom after covid, as the industry was already under strain before all this happened.

I miss socialising over a pub meal more than the beer and have also started buying beer at Majestic wine as well as wine and use specialist on-line beer shops. Best of British beer have had some exceptionally good beer, especially the mixed cases.

Shameless plug for our local microbrewery: Wylde Sky www.wyldeskybrewing.com
Definitely recommend their American Pale Ale and New England IPA.

I definitely can't wait for a pint in my local, that said, the underlying feeling in the industry is two things:

1) When pubs re-open, they'll be a short rush but that actually, quite a lot of people will still steer clear and choose to have social gatherings in homes / gardens as it'll be safer and cheaper.

2) That the industry leaders will drop the prices of cask / keg right down to pubs which will impact on the smaller, local breweries being priced out to supply.

The pandemic has meant a lot of people have looked to local which is great, and in the world of beer, mini kegs, bag in box etc are such great products, that sitting in your garden with a few mates, pouring your own pints (I think) is far more appealing than sitting in segregated zones within a pub.

Best bet, find that balance of supporting your local pub and local producers.

I think that's probably right, although 'good' pubs will do better than the average ones. And by good, I include those that do food but also have an ambience (and range of beer) that make them appealing. A bit harder for the smaller ones to maintain that unfortunately, the Southampton Arms in Kentish Town for example is a great pub but might suffer.

I'm looking forward to getting back to the pub but I'll not be rushing out on 12 April, will give it a week or two for the initial rush to subside (unless I get tempted) but would then think I'll be in a pub fairly often although, without football, rather less than before last March.

One of the other things that WFH has enabled people to do is get beer delivered easily, it's much harder when stuck in an office five days a week. I'll still do that if I can, nice to have a stock with some variety in at home*.

* I did order from Away Days for my most recent one, and now working my way through them.

I've not missed busy noisy places but one of my joys is to get in at early doors, nice and quiet, gentle ticking of a clock, a pint of bang on form bitter and half and hour's go at the crossword. That and wandering around somewhere and finding a great bar/pub by chance.

First few months, yes.

Now conditioned not to.

Have saved a fair few quid because of it, too.

If the lockdown were to end tomorrow, I wouldn't be rushing out to the pub - so guess not really missed them.......but think it is because it has just been so long!

I spend a lot of time in pubs for work, was at The Salutation and The Halberd today as an examples, and starting a scheme at a pub in Manningtree on Monday.

There doesn't feel a whole lot of positivity about re-opening them and feel that the changed habits - unless we have a beautiful summer and beer gardens packed - is going to hit a lot of pubs very hard once the initial buzz is done

mmmmmm pub. can't wait. pub garden. pub at the end of a dog walk. pub lunch before the footy. really what's not to like?

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I only drink three evenings a week but probably drink more than I would if I were in a pub - for the simple reason that it’s easier to keep pouring the plonk when you get stuck in a YouTube circle.

At least when you are in the pub you can hear the last order bell, walk home and fall into your bed.

It’s also nice to people watch and talk sh1te.

I live in the backend of beyond, but when I am in civilisation there is nothing I miss more than a few beers with mates before and after footie. Or, wandering into some unknown pub in a new town and talking shoite with random strangers. I can't wait.
