After a year of comfortable unemployment I now have 2 offers of work with start dates.

1 starts 10th May but will require this 52 year old lard ass pass a fitness test. I have been training for it and whilst still a lard ass a considerably lighter and fitter one than this time last year

2 starts 20th April pays 25% more and is Mon-Fri + 1 Sat per 4 weeks

1 will ensure I continue to lose weight and improve fitness, but is entry level job in a completely new industry
2 straight into a management position in an industry related to what I was doing until March 2020.

Once upon a time I'd have been all about the money, but actually quite fancy the more physically demanding lesser paid job, though that has a compulsory retirement age.

Coin toss?

Sometimes a complete change is a real tonic, but couldn't you take the second option and continue with the weight loss/exercise plan outside of work?

Aren't you supposed to toss a coin and if you're disappointed with the outcome, you know what the real choice should be.

2 definitely - any physicially demanding job for someone over 50 (who's not previously had a career in physical work) is, like playing for ITFC, an almost guaranteed way to get injured, and then possibly losing that job - I suggest taking the pragmatic approach I'm afraid...

Congrats on the predicament.

Given proximity to retirement, pay should be considered a material factor. Maybe take a look at your current projected retirement income as it stands now, and what it would be under either option to determine whether number 1 is still a sensible choice. It will be a key determinant of your standard of living for what could be 35+ years, and forecasts often assume high rates of savings for the last decade before retirement (with kids having left the nest etc).

If those were the options then it'd be 1 all the way, I've heard the minge benefits are excellent

Congrats on having a choice. If the compulsory retirement age was 53 I'd be taking that one if I was you!

Congratulations on finding two new roles, but it has to be no. 2, as an (reasonably active) over 60 the minor physical issues mount up at an ever increasing rate through your 50's, so my advice would be to go for the management role but make sure you build an exercise routine into your life.

How soon would you take the fitness test? Would be a shame to fail it and find you have lost out on the alternative.

Congratulations. I'd agree - the management role.

As for exercise, some of those clipboards can be pretty heavy.

And when exercising your management judgement, don't put Sitters on burger-flipping every day.*

Good news, and the consensus on the thread is definitely correct.

If the fitness is the main reason for looking at a change of direction then use some of the extra money towards fitness somehow - gym membership, personal trainer perhaps.

Avocado farm still on the agenda, just need some elderly relatives to pass away, not for the inheritance but for the release from carer duties.

When I have it I'll hold a bbq there, everyone invited.
