Here's a bit of a leftfield suggestion 11:27 - Apr 20 with 1643 views | The_Flashing_Smile | Luke Chambers as a fitness coach? He's one of very few ITFC players who rarely gets injured (and even when he does he soldiers on regardless). I appreciate this may just be the way he's built, but with so many football coaches at or joining the club, wouldn't he serve us better in this area in some capacity (if moving away from playing). I'd imagine he knows a thing or two about correct diet as well. He already does a lot of good work mentoring the kids, so if he can get them doing and eating all the right stuff from an early age, his knowledge there could be invaluable in years to come.

He is. When he's not running overall club strategy, first team tactics, transfer policy....

Along with Bryan Klug who as we all know is a natural fit for any vacant position at ITFC.

I suppose a formal qualification wouldn't hurt, but surely the evidence of years of playing at a high level with very few injuries is the only 'qualification' he needs? I'd expect Gamchanger to put in an experienced team on the fitness side regardless. I certainly wouldn't expect it to be a one-man-band.

Also.. he may just be good at knowing his own body doesnt mean he would automatically know what's best for others.

And causing the collapse of the football pyramid as we know it. On a serious note. I think we need someone from the outside coming in from a team with proven results. If Chambers wants to learn to be a coach, then fine, learn. But I don't think we should be offering him positions just because we like and respect him. I think he should go down the same route as any other ex Ipswich player trying to make it as a coach here.

It really isn't. We need to be aspiring to better than this. Good luck to the guy. If he decides to learn here as a coach, then good for him. But there will be much better out there for us and we need to not be so sentimental about his career coming to a natural end.

You do realise a great coach/manager could literally come from anywhere? I'm sure many on here will agree, that the best coaches and managers aren't necessarily those who have all the bits of paper to support how good they are and we know some distinctly average players become great coaches and some great players become average coaches. The club will know what Chambers can bring and whether he can do a job. A part of me wonders if Dyer is stepping up and Chambers potentially taking Dyer's position.

We've been amateurs playing at being professional for too long. 'He's kept fit that's good enough' is like saying that you're qualified to be a nurse or a doctor because you don't get ill very often. [Post edited 20 Apr 2021 13:26]

I do realise that, which is why it is highly unlikely that the best coach available to us is a retiring player from within our own club. Probability wise, it is highly unlikely. I'd prefer we get someone with proven experience, as the likelihood of them replicating that is high. Particularly if they can bring in new ideas that can improve upon our current set up. Don't get me wrong, I wish Chambers well and think he has attributes that could see him do well in a multitude of different roles in the future. But he needs to establish himself as a credible candidate first. That means getting his badges and getting experience.

Didn't think I was being sentimental. I genuinely thought he has something to offer, compared to every other Ipswich player who seem to be made of glass.

I'd like to see us go and head hunt the best fitness coach in the division instead of trying someone new.

Then I don't think he's needed. It's not a terrible idea though. Personally i'd rather we kept him as a back up CB.

Mogga came back from a behind-the-scenes role, so yeah. No problem with that. This bit is sentimental - I'd like Ipswich to rise again with Chambo involved in some way. I know he's on the wane, and was never a world beater, but I really believe he cares. He goes above and beyond the call of duty for me, with all the little things you hear, so it'd be a real shame if he's tarnished with the failure years. He's better than that IMO.

I agree. I think giving him one more year and seeing him (hopefully) finish his time here with some sort of medal would be nice. Not just sentiment for me though. He has played most minutes in a top 5 defence and I just don't see the logic in not offering him a one year deal.

As I've tried to point out countless times, I'm not saying Chambers is the be all and end all to fitness. I'm saying he might have some expertise in this area. I'm not saying don't employ experts, Chambo will do.
