Interesting article about Barcelona and their financial situation on 10:38 - Jul 20 with 2339 views | factual_blue | I remember reading some years ago that both Barcelona and Real Madrid have such eye-wateringly large debts that they won't be allowed by the Spanish authorities to go under as that would cause the collapse of the Spanish financial system.

Interesting. I guess its not that simple now uefa have their finacial fair play thing. Looks like Coutinho is going cheap - could do a job for the canaries as a super sub perhaps. Maybe they're have to just not sign Messi.

Sounds like they're in a real hole, but maybe players will play for cheap just to be part of the institution?

Spent some horrific sums on players who either haven't fitted into the style of play. The old president done a terrible job.

I can't see that happening. Busquets, Pique and Alba are coming to the end of their careers so are more likely to take pay cuts, similarly Ter Steigen who is well settled in Barcelona. Others I'm sure will sit on their contracts if they can't be moved on. Problem is now everyone is alerted to Barça's situation so they're not going to get top dollar. That in turn has knock on effects, not just for less cash coming in but the initial fee paid spread over fewer years is going to cause real accounting issues.

I wonder if it's that straightforward. The article mentions sponsors applying pressure. Could be that substantial sponsorship income depends on signing him.

Hasn't he already agreed to sign and take a 50% pay cut!? Pretty much playing for the love of the club on 'only' £1m a week going forward........on a contract that guarantees him that until he is about 52 years old.

He’s agreed a deal but they can’t sign him - worth giving the article a read

The issues aren’t just salaries, it’s the amortisation of fees which have means their transfer activity is more about balancing the books than building the squad It’s only touched on briefly in the article but last Summer they were in such a desperate position they had to ‘swap’ Arthur (young midfielder with 70-odd appearances for Barca in the 2 seasons prior for 30 year old Miralem Pjanic, with the latter getting a 4 year contract. Deal was structured as 2 transfers so Barca could bank the sale fee immediately, with Pjanic’s spread over 4 years Similarly this Summer the influx of frees is to help ease that burden (as no fee to amortise) - with Barca being lucky that there’s been an unusually high number of quality options on that front this year

20 million euro's a year after tax basic plus bonus's, down from 45 million a year basic after tax, but for 5 years to make's up the difference over a longer period. He will not exactly be looking for food parcels.

We need to sign that player right on the close of the transfer window as a gift to Phil - 'Pjanic Signing' would be just the antidote to the TWTD culture wars...

I don't think they can afford not to sign Messi, the article reads as though a lot of the club sponsorship rides on him being there.

I believe also that Phillippe Coutinho is only a handful of games away from the clause that makes them have to pay Liverpool £10.7 million for the number of appearances he's made for Barca. Probably why they can't wait to to get rid.

Indeed, although the issue with Barca right now is around La Liga’s version of FFP, rather than the overall club debt

Don't know if it's still the case but also read a couple of years ago that the T/V money was skewed in favour of the "big two" in La Liga. Wonder if that's the case, or perhaps the levelling up has taken a big chunk of revenue away from them both.

I get where you are coming from regarding his pay cut. But imagine if your boss told you from here your payroll is going to be cut in half. I know it not exactly a comparison as what can some spend a million euros on a month, but he still agreed to cut his pay by 50% and ask you to carry on working at the same level. That to me is 💯 commitment.

Was even more cringe when Barca acted like the good guys whose entire team was academy products vs those evil pay 2 win merchants Madrid. They have always been as bad as each other.

When did Barça field a full team of academy players? It's not something I remember.

They didn’t, but that was the “good guys” angle them and their fans tried to portray in the 00’s even when they had £50m+ signings all over the team.
