Surely the end of the road as manager after this comment?

His use of language and people's objections to it is very nteresting. He used the term 'A holocaust' which is a general term meaning desth and slaughter on a wide scale, rather than 'The Holocaust' which has a particular meaning and refers to one especially sinister historical event.

From a linguistic point of view I wonder ff this indicates a shift in usage towards 'holocaust' only referring the mass murder of Jews during the second world war, and whether that only applies to the unqualified term, or whether phrases like 'nuclear holocaust' , which used to be common, should now be considered antiquated, or if they are still OK, f he had used 'a football holocaust' whether that would be considered unobjectionable.

The word ‘holocaust’ obviously predates ‘THE HOLOCAUST’. But the word has become uniquely associated with the slaughter of six million Jews and the attempt by the Nazis to exterminate the Jewish people.

It’s a word, when used, that causes considerable distress to Jewish people. It’s a word that should be avoided to describe something. Especially something as trivial as a football match.

Joey Barton portrays himself as an educated and articulate person. A deep thinker. He should know better.

It astounds me that Joey Barton still has a career in the public eye when you consider the fact that this is one of his tamer arsehole moves.

Tamer not to be confused with tame.

It’s the wrong word – we’re talking about football.

But it’s been used before as the “worst possible thing” when people talk about a nuclear holocaust or a natural holocaust.

He should correct it and we should all move on.

For all the Joey Barton things, this is pretty low down and likely just a misuse of the word.

Three points:
1) The word holocaust has been used to refer specifically to the mass murder of Jews since the 12th century;
2) He knows perfectly well that if he uses that word, virtually 100% of his audience would most closely associate it with the mass murder of Jews in World War II; and
3) There's no way he would have heard of that word if it were not for its association with the mass murder of Jews in World War II.

He knows what connotations that word has. At best he is trivialising.

He is a very trivial man though. If he wasn’t vaguely good at football he would be hosting a YouTube red pill channel, selling people diet plans, doing martial arts, and writing awful poetry.

It is true. I do wonder how he managed to convince the world (or at least the journalistic world) at one point that he was some sort of philosopher. I suppose that particular bar is very low when it comes to professional footballers, or at least male ones of his generation.

I'm not defending Barton in any way as I believe he is a horrible excuse for a human being, however there is a huge difference between 'a (nuclear) holocaust' (for example) and 'The Holocaust'...still a very poor choice of words on his part, whether deliberate or not.

I agree with most of that, and also GBs similar points from earlier. I am not trying to excuse Joey Barton in any way, he has a reputation as, lets say, being provocative, and I guess he knew that using the word holocaust in this way would create a reaction.

I was just making a wider point about the use of the word generally. Although now it is mostly associated with The Holocaust, it does have a broader meaning but by and large people do associate it only with The Holocaust. The only other context that it really gets used is 'nuclear holocaust', incidentally that's why I don't agree with your third point, most people will have come across that term.

I think that this incident indicates a shift in the use of the word, which is interesting.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.
