Shortlist is out. Tyson Fury gets my vote. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/sports-personality/59607666

His nomination really baffles me.

He hasn't even been the best boxer in Britain this year. He only won one fight and that was against somebody he already beat twice. I genuinely have no idea why he was nominated.

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?

Because it is Sports Personality Of The Year, rather than "Best Sportsperson" you could arguably include the stuff he's done on mental health.

Worth a vote as he doesn’t want to be on the shortlist.

My first thought was Peaty hands down but on reflection Raducanu's achievement was something special so I'm a little torn between them.

Raducanu will surely walk it

He’s spent a year saying if he got nominated again he’d be suing them.

Not looked at the list but if Radacanu and Peaty aren’t on a shortlist of presumably 10 or 12, it’s wrong. They ought to be 1st and 2nd.

I tried betting Radacanu for this before the final but she was 1/4. Someone had clocked that if she won the final, she’d win this and she was 2/5 for the final.

Poll: Would you take a draw tonight if offered right now?

I think Raducanu, amazing achievement for her, hopefully not just a one-off. But Sarah Story has a good shout as well, 17 golds and she is 44. Impressive.

I thought his homophobia/sexism would've ruled him out of that award.

Plus, the award is given on sporting achievement isn't it, if it was going to big characters the award would just go to people with good banter every year surely ?

Yes, it might. Plus he doesn't seem to want it.

SPOTY, in reality, comes down to a public popularity contest.

How on earth has Mark Cavendish not been nominated? Maybe it's because the TdF is only shown on itv4...

Outside of Ipswich, no not really. Don't mind a bit of darts on the TV.

Tom Daley, Tyson Fury, Adam Peaty, Sarah Storey, Raheem Sterling, Emma Raducanu,

I know that Tom, Tyson and Raheem but no idea on the others.

You seriously have never heard of Adam Peaty?!?!

And you must have lived under a rock for 6 months to not know Raducanu?!

I am sports mad, so obviously know them all, but just find it odd that you've avoided hearing about them in the news, even if you don't like sport.

btw Raducanu has it nailed on.

RIP Sir Bobby

Not sure they've ever mean personality in that sense, just sportsperson. Think it's always been on sporting achievement and the award's name is a bit archaic.

I have now googled Adam and Emma but really have zero interest in the Olympics or tennis so well done to them but its not for me.

Weird then that Jason and Laura Kenny are not only the list if the Olympics is the pinnacle.

but in 10 years time when you look at past winners it might be "2021 Raducanu? Who's she?".

Yes it was a great win but in a strange year (many big names didn't play in that tournament) it might just turn out to be a one-off before she disappears without trace.

Zactly.

As Guthers pointed out, it's sports *personality*, so how come Rashford's not even listed, given his huge hits on feeding disadvantaged kids quite rightly landing so well with the public - and politicians actually taking note?

It isn't about the personality though is it. Its really about achievement. Not sure why it is even called that.

If it was about personality, I'm not sure Andy Murray would have won it a few times.... haha

Used to enjoy it when you could vote for whoever you liked. Now it's getting a PC list from Auntie Beeb telling us who we are allowed to vote for.

I would have thought there are goat herders in the Himalayas who have heard of most of them.

I'm not sure about Sarah Storey but would assume there's some decent anecdotes about her.
