Actually feel sick 15:49 - Feb 27 with 3791 views | blueasfook | The situation with Russia is escalating rapidly. I'm convinced Putin has lost the plot and is out of control. He needs to be reigned in from within. But who has the balls among the yes men that surround him? I also feel he is painting himself into a corner and is going down a road from which there is no coming back. Let's hope the talks go well this afternoon!

More likely the military, as he is ex KGB, so security services are not going to touch him. Needs the popular opinion too though, so people on the street need to be brave.

Whoever does it, I'd like to imagine it's a much more likely scenario than things 'going all the way'.

I think that's the best chance for regime change in Russia. The people themselves need to rise up en masse and force a change in leadership.

Actually feel sick on 19:17 - Feb 27 with 2713 views | Guthrum | To be fair, what Putin actually said was he was putting Russian nuclear forces into a defensive alert posture. There was some mistranslation, initially. For that matter, nuclear deterrant forces (ours as well as theirs) are on alert permanently anyway. It's the nature of the beast.

It’s looking like this has backfired for him. Having not crushed Ukraine immediately I don’t see how he can now save face. I’ve no idea if he’s mad enough to press the button, but a cornered rat and all that… Hopefully it’s just posturing, but most people began by thinking amassing troops on the Ukraine border was just posturing.

Seeing as you're knocking around, a question: Roughly how many Nuclear blasts could the world withstand before a nuclear winter became inevitable?

Yes of course but he knew exactly what effect his words would have. It's the same games, say one thing but suggest another, leaving as many translations available as possible.

Nobody knows. More than a handful over the space of a few weeks (c.f. some of the atmospheric test programmes of the 1940s, '50s and '60s. But certainly an all-out exchange between the superpowers (hundreds or thousands of warheads in a matter of hours) would be enough.

Putin isn't really cornered and can save face by claiming to have completed the "peacekeeping operation" he always said it was. Especially if the Ukrainians commit to some form of neutrality (e.g. agreeing not to join NATO). His domestic reputation is of vastly more importance than what the Western public (or even leaders) think. Thus he can cover himself in bullsh1t and get away with it.

Best chance to survive any of this, is to emigrate to the Southern Hemisphere. All nuclear powers are in the Northern Hemisphere, so chances are all nukes would be dropped in the north. Would also give better odds to get through the 10 years or so of a nuclear winter. I'd say New Zealand would be the best place.

There is plenty more nastiness to be unleashed between what has happened so far and any nuclear concerns. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russian-convoy-ground-forces-fuel-tanks-mov

Something in the region of 2,500 warheads I think I heard on the TV earlier. That's just Russia's stock.

This pic / story looks awful. A military convoy over 3km heading towards Kiev. Really sends a shudder down the spine.

Putin has a real problem, in that there is no way he can occupy and pacify Ukraine. The only way he wins is if Ukraine surrenders, and even that would require some kind of occupying force and longterm guerilla warfare.. You wouldn't fancy being one of the occupying troops... It is fascinating that Germany and,Sweden are to supply arms for the first time since ww2 and 1939 respectively also that the EU is looking to provide a vast amount of military hardware. Will this drag on or escalate horribly?
Actually feel sick on 20:17 - Feb 27 with 2229 views | Melford | He's got the same grip that Stalin had, if anyone in that inner circle publicly denounced him they would be checking everything they ate or drank for the rest of the lives in case of the Polonium surprise. I think there must be a couple who think he's lost it but they'd rather stay alive with their families intact than rock the boat, it's not like leaving your ministerial position and having a pop at Boris before you go to the back benches.

But every attack he has made has been "defensive" according to him. I don't trust that to mean a retaliatory strike.
