£11.50 for haddock and chips.

On the plus side there was no queue.

There was a thing about this on the radio last week. A lot of chippies are going to go bust. My favourite takeaway bar none.

Any company that has to heat or refrigerate is gonna get hit - and no price cap on commercial.

Mind you - takeaways made an absolute killing during covid.

Rough with the smooth.

I only get a takeaway every now and then and I suppose fish and chips just 2 or 3 times per year.

But was busy today and lost track of time and wasn't about to start cooking and all that.

So nipped round to where I know there's a van doing the rounds on a Wednesday and there was not a soul there. There's always been a queue but I suppose the price increase and maybe the heat is a factor too?

Hope for their sake they're able to ride the storm; they're nice people and I like to see types who put themselves out there do well.

Went to my local chippy last night. It's been totally renovated and they've turned the counter through 90 degrees.
It looked good, the food was nice but they had six people working in there!! One to take the order, one to wrap, one to put it in a bag...I assume the others were chippers, batterers and fryers, but six? There were only two customers including me!!
I can't see it surviving.

Crikey.

Sounds like they've over estimated their audience somewhat.

That's a set-up for a flat-out weekend night in a busy high street not a Tuesday evening anywhere.

£8.50 from the fish and chip van that goes around for us. It's gone up £2.50 in around 6 months.

Around six quid or so sounds about right doesn't it.

I wouldn't be so rude as to walk away once I'm there and was happy enough to order and offer my modest support, but admittedly I will think twice at that money next time.

£11.50 for one person for pity's sake. It is usually £12 for a sit down fish and chips in a local restaurant so heck knows what that is now.

I remember we used to sneak out of primary school and, with our 1/- dinner money, get fish cake and chips (9d) and a quarter of pineapple chunks (3d).

More enjoyable than school dinners.

more like 15.50 locally around Woodbridge, sure you can get fish n chips for 8 quid and a drink in Wetherspoons, but 11.50 isnt that unusual for take away I think. It will depend on the quality of the fish, and cod is increasing in price

I'm talking about a van that comes round, not Wetherspoons.

Same goes for the fish and chip shops. Just a few weeks ago it was around £8.50 mark which it has been for the past couple of years.

The Angel in Lavenham was only around £12 and now upon inspection is £13 something.

To try to suggest up to £15 per person from a fish and chip shop is normal would be daft.

Edit: for the record, I am aware of the reasons for the current hike.

Wivenhoe here. We have an "award winning" fish and chip shop, but for the five of us (two adults and three children) it's over £50 now.

Sign of the times.

From a chip van, yes around £6 sounds reasonable.

£17 for two of us to get fish and chips from a van seems on the steep side and we won't be going back any time soon.

We won't be the only ones thinking like that either.

I guess it depends how good the product is?
£17 for two is still good value compared to, for instance, pizzas round here, if the fish and chips are good.

I guess it's weighing up convenience vs cost at the moment.

A £2.50 increase over 6 months is not an attractive proposition or maybe I'm just more tight in my 30's than I was in my 20's (more responsibility now plays into that).

Not a great sign of a fish n chip shop if there's not a sole there.

As someone who used to know Wivenhoe rather well a good long time ago, I remember there used to be three chippies, including one up at Vine Farm.

Is the one you're talking about the one in East Street?

Vine Drive.

It's the gherkins which push the price up. £1.25 each!
