Alex Ferguson on the Cobbolds 19:49 - Sep 22 with 3183 views | Miaow | I spotted a book of Alex Ferguson's today in the charity shop where I volunteer - "Leading", published around 2015. Flicked to the index at the back to see if there was any mention of Town or Sir Bobby, etc. I did find this nice, brief bit about the Cobbolds' ownership of the club: "There have been some really good owners of clubs but, unfortunately, they are in a distinct minority. The Cobbold family, who controlled Ipswich Town for many years, were gems. They were deeply rooted in the surrounding community and were brewers and pub owners. Both Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson worked for them as Ipswich managers, for whom they must have been a godsend. Today there is a VIP club at Ipswich Town called the 'Cobbold Club', even though the family hasn't been involved for quite a long time. That speaks volumes. Most clubs would probably like to forget their former owners." That last line definitely rings true... Also, is the Cobbold Club actually a thing? I haven't heard of it before.

I think I remember rightly that Sir Alex spoke very nicely about Burley in his match day programme notes when we played them at Old Trafford in December 2000. He was impressed that Burley had the grace and guts to go straight over to him and shake his hand after the 9-0 defeat.

He did, and from memory I think TalkSport did some kind of test and decided we were as loud as a jumbo jet. That was when we first got back to the Prem in 2000. I put it down to the daft old cow on the next aisle who had hands like a bear and clapped them incessantly. She was genuinely a main reason for moving from Pioneer to Upper North............ ...........only for then to be situated behind Mr and Mrs boring as hell.

I think the story has evolved in that SBR was asked who should take over and said "Ferguson" - meaning Alex Ferguson, but the board thought he meant Bobby Ferguson. I find that quite fanciful to be honest and I can't recollect anyone but Bobby Ferguson being in the frame.

That is true, he was quietly asked whether he might be interested when the clubs met in Europe. He felt he needed to spend more time at Aberdeen before moving to England.

Is that definite info, who told you that? I don't recall anyone apart from Bobby Ferguson being in the frame. Not saying you aren't right, it's just that I don't recall anything at the time. If true that's left me a bit melancholy - although I have just come up with a new food which has lightened my mood. Basically I hate pizza but I make the odd home made one on a pitta bread with mackerel and it's blooming tasty. Anyhoo - I thought I would make one this week on a Nan Bread but I just went to do it and I have run out of mackerel - so, I used all I had in the fridge which is basically cheese and an old jar of spicy pringle dipping sauce. I used the spicy pringle sauce as a base and then added blobs of Roquefort and a layer of cheddar before sprinkling a load of chili flakes and topping it off with grated parmesan Oh my!!! Taste sensation

That's a fair point and I often say similar - but if you make it on a pitta and fish it up a bit with a load of chilis it's blooming spot on.

Alex Ferguson on the Cobbolds on 08:29 - Sep 23 with 1736 views | itfcjoe | I was actually reading Paddy Barclay's biography of Sir Alex (Football, Bloody Hell) last night and he notes a couple of times the comparisons between Ipswich and Aberdeen as clubs. Clubs built of the back of a glorious period, that fed into the rural communities based around outposts and built big fan bases that have remained, good facilities and basically put the towns on the map.

I don’t think I’ve heard a noise in a football stadium that compares with when Wilnis scored against United. Of course that was pre the development and the acoustics were a lot better then.

I'm sure you're right, I don't think anyone was in the frame as such when the change happened but the question had quietly been asked earlier in the season.

That really was the goal that set us up, gave us the confidence to do what we did in that season after promotion to the Prem - wonderful stuff, and Fab was da man!

A while ago on here I asked whether there were other candidates on ‘the list’ to replace SBR. I was told that SBR was asked for his opinion on who should replace him to which he replied ‘Ferguson’ meaning Alex Ferguson. But the board mistook this for Bobby Ferguson- not sure if this is true or not. Were we an attractive proposition for an ambitious manager back then?

I think Town would have been a poor proposition for any manger in 1982 on anything other than a superficial level. Robson's great side was breaking up & finances were poor. There was little emerging talent coming through. Unsurprisingly, the 1982-83 season was the first of 9 years of steady decline. SAF was no fool & he turned down Wolves around that time as he could see they were a club in decline & I reckon he'd have made the same judgement about Town. Before moving to Man U, he was also offered the manager's job at Rangers, Arsenal & Spurs at various times.

Thanks for this. I had no idea that SAR turned down so many clubs but it makes sense as he must have been in demand.

SAF was a god judge & also wary of owners after tangling with the St Mirren chairman in his early days. I think he advised other up & coming managers to do their research on the owners before joining a club, although not everyone has that luxury. I think he liked the Cobbolds given that they were very hospitable, while realising that they knew nothing about football so didn't interfere.
