What do the Japanese and the Scots have in common? 03:29 - Nov 24 with 2339 viewsjeera

They both love haggis!

Not really, no one really likes haggis.

Both have sets of fans who clear up after themselves:

You should do what I do.

When the house has got completely cluttered I invite some friends over and then the Mrs cleans up.

If I need a deep clean I invite her brothers.

I’ll take transparent disinformation and lies about Scottish independence ... part and parcel.

But how bloody dare you besmirch the good name of haggis!!? You’re a cad and a barbarian 😥

Only had haggis once, made by a Scottish lady I knew at the time so it was ‘proper’. I actually enjoyed it.

I had it at a stag do in Glasgow and similarly enjoyed it.

Haggis is tremendous but they can stick the parsnips or turnips (whatever they have with it) up your arse.

Best I ever had was in a pub in Aberdeen.

I'm off to Scotland in a couple of weeks, must make a mental note to score some.

Glad to hear it.

There are some very good veg ones too as it’s really all about the herbs and spices.

I never leave rubbish at a footie ground. Or almost never anyway. If I’ve put a cup down and it’s been kicked half way down the row I’m not going to go hunting for it. But other than that I take out and stick it in a bin. I blame all the anti-littering ads when I was a kid.

If they're clearing up after themselves, then by definition does that mean the vast majority of their fans just left their sh1t everywhere for a handful of them to tidy up?

I love haggis btw, I have it at least once a fortnight.

Honestly, if you've never been to Japan, I recommend you go.

The cleanest, safest, friendliest place I've ever been. The level of respect even with children is something I'd never seen before.

It's the kind of place that you can leave your bike unlocked (in fact no bikes I saw were locked up, people leave their phones/laptops at cafes whilst they go to the toilet etc as they know nobody will steal it.

Completely different world to here.

Japan is certainly somewhere worth visiting although the Japanese reserve is even more marked than the English one, depending upon your nature I think you might find Jamaica, some African countries and Canada more friendly. Also, for an independent traveller, the language and different script can be a challenge when you go outside city centres and tourist areas - but they are ever helpful. At some point I will go back and travel north from Osaka rather than getting wrapped up in Kyoto, Himeji, Nara and the Sea of Japan which, along with a journey down through Hiroshima and Nagasaki to the island of Yakushima took up all of my month there.

Yes they're certainly very reserved but they will always help the best they can. In Osaka, I asked a bouncer where a particular Karaoke bar was. He walked with me to show me for at least 10-15 minutes. In a lot of places, they certainly wouldn't do that and I felt bad!

I really like Osaka and recommend it. The people there are a lot more laid back and less reserved.

We took our lad there when he was a toddler and he was the centre of attention everywhere we went. People couldn't have done more to help us, from carrying the pushchair at railway stations, giving up their seats, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Me and the lad had a week to explore the south around Kagoshima while the Mrs was in a conference. And then we had a couple of weeks travelling around - Yakushima Island, Hiroshima, Osaka (great aquarium!), Kyoto, Nagoya and then back to Tokyo.

Amazing trip and I'd love to go back.

Wow, sounds like you had an amazing trip! I'm really hoping to go back with my wife and (Hopefully) future child, but unfortunately she's from quite a traditional family that hasn't travelled outside of the UK so doesn't understand it and thus she has very little interest.

I visited Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima. I hope to visit areas like Kagoshima.

Sounds like it's a good place to take a child by what you say with people helping all the time!

I still have on my bucket list to hire a 90s Japanese sports car like an RX-7 and drive around the roads by Mt Fuji. I got a bit too nervous last time and really regret it. It also rained on the day I planned to do it.

Just move to Norfolk opposite a house that's for sale. They will clean the windows at least.

I would recommend the aquarium in Osaka too, I used that as my day recovering from the flight and acclimatising to Japan and it worked a treat. Will take you the whole day to get around that place too, how many floors is it on ? Six, maybe and the enormous glass tank in the middle of it all.

Just to add to the Japan love. 2002 world cup was something else.

The transport system is quite difficult for a visitor, I asked a random to let me know when I arrived at a station, showing him the name of the station I needed. Guy helpfully indicates we'd arrived, so happens it's his stop so at street level he kindly points me in the right direction too for my destination.

Only it wasn't his stop, after looking at my map and helping me he turns around and heads back to the tube. These stories happened all the time, so much so that to this day I will stop and offer help to Japanese tourists in London looking lost.

There were so many of these stories of extroadinary helpfulness, one guy desperately asking for help to get to Shizuka after missing a train and a local driving him the 2 hours to make kick off and refusing petrol money. After the game he was waiting to give him a lift back to Tokyo ffs.

For me I couldn't live there, society is far too ordered/sructured for my liking. But to visit and expereince,, absolutely.
