Depends how you read it I guess. The headline on that link is 'Less than half of England and Wales population Christian'. I would read it as there's less Christians than non-Christians, which appears to be what the census is saying. [Post edited 29 Nov 2022 15:08]

"Less than half of England and Wales population Christian" That ambiguity is where the misleading is. The inference being that other religions have over taken Christianity Why single out one religion ? Why not state that .....believe in religion is now in the minority ? Less than half of England and Wales population Christian, Census 2021 shows on 15:36 - Nov 29 with 1975 views | SlippinJimmyJuan | I was surprised it wasn't lower already. Covid probably played its part in that. I can't help but feel that lots of people who were christened but have no other affiliation to Christianity have just been ticking "Christian" for decades, pumping the numbers up. That's quite a white British perspective though, as the only Christians I know of my age are from African, Carribbean, Eastern European or Southeast Asian families. Those minority populations have all grown so you would think that the drop off is particularly severe among white British. Anecdotally, all of the white British Christians I knew as a child have renounced their faith due to discovering their sexuality and not being able to square that circle with the religion they inherited from their parents. Can't say I see the demise of organised religion as particularly bad news, however, I do think it goes some way to explaining a breakdown of community values. Not because religion is the only or even an effective way of bringing people together, but because nothing of any virtue has taken it's place. It's all part of a wider trend of us becoming more isolated and individualistic.

Because that's the story? That previously the majority of English and Welsh citizens identified as Christian, and for the first time that is no longer the case. I fail to see how that's controversial in any way?

No, that is how the findings have been presented via the headline - one that is intentionally provocative. Why not post a headline that points to a lower number who now see themselves as religious ? "Less than half of England and Wales population Christian" Nothing to suggest it might be that those who previously stated they were Christian no longer do, but that those who do have been replaced by other religions

Well - that headline isn't wrong as such is it. "The proportion of people who said they were Christian was 46.2%, down from 59.3% in the last census in 2011." The article then goes on to clearly state in the very next paragraph: "In contrast the number who said they had no religion increased to 37.2% of the population, up from a quarter." As I said in my OP, the takeaway is that very third para in the article.

Because it isn't? 63% still state they have a belief. And the inference is yours, I don't see an implication.

Reasoned argument doesn't seem to be one of your strongest points. That the rest of the article is at odds with the headline merely underlines my point. The headlines used are misleading. That is obvious. Whether that is intentional or not is a moot point

The demise of organised religion, specifically Christianity, may well be bad news given pretty much all our latter-day morality is based upon it. I agree with most everything else you say.

That's very true, can't disagree with you. Not sure there is much hope of replacing that with some sort of civic moral code either. Maybe they'll make ethics part of the curriculum?

Hmmmmm. The 10 commandments, which are pretty much common sense for a large community to get along, are Old Testament/Judaism which is a long time before Jesus so not based on Christianity.
