The White Elm woodland is an utter sh1thole at present. Leaves are sludging into the footpath over a layer of already existing litter, someone’s flytipped half a full house fitout next to one of the abandoned commercial buildings.
The council proposed to buy it a while ago you may remember me posting, but I can’t remember ever seeing it this much a mess.
I feel like most places I go in Ipswich litter is worse than I ever remember seeing it anywhere else. Not London, not Portsmouth nor many UK places I’ve been in my lifetime.
Is this a wider issue in the UK at present or isolated here? Has it got worse? And what on earth is going on?
Waste is my specialist area, and there was a big increase in flytipping nationally following covid. No one really knows why - but it definitely isn't just an Ipswich thing.

Getting wasted is mine…
I won’t make any wild guesses as to why it’s not cleaned up, but I’m sure it involves budgets/staff.

Wasn't a booking system introduced at many of the tips during covid, which might have caused some who couldn't get a booking at a convenient time to decide to fly-tip?

Nuking humanity into the apocalypse is an equally viable option that cuts out the middle man of waiting to die off slowly/painfully.
That would work too. I was being tongue in cheek, I hate flytipping, or littering of any sort. It's just lazy, inconsiderate and selfish, but that really is the way this country has gone since 1978.

Tbf, the borough council are very good at clearing things if it is reported, but it does need to be reported as they can't monitor everywhere. A lot of flytipping is left in places where it is out of sight of the main road a bit - your abandoned commercial building sounding like a good example.

Maybe with all the restrictions around going to the tip, people have forgotten it is an option. I can't understand it, why some people make the effort to drive out somewhere remote to dump their crap rather than drive to the local tip makes no sense.

I won't say too much, for fear of unveiling myself or my job, but the waste that tends to be fly tipped comes almost entirely from dodgy traders/waste operators and not from otherwise law abiding residents.

Because it isn't those people. People that fly tip are traders that should be paying to dispose of their waste, rather than a resident deciding to break the law on a whim.

I am fairly sure the issue of littering generally is far worse. Around here there are volunteer groups regularly clean up, but it is still a problem. The closure of the council recycling centre at Beccles has made fly-tipping more of a problem in these parts too, I am sure.

It is no excuse, but the only thing I can think is that the waste & recycling centres all seem to still be by appointment only. I'm sure that is enough to make some dump and run, although not sure if this is the case in Suffolk. I have seen a lot of construction waste (bricks, worktops, pipes) just abandoned down footpaths near me.

Stop issuing people with litter, which does appear to be the cause of the problem
And the ridiculously low fines are no deterrent, especially for commercial waste.
I would also suggest that it is a cultural problem.
Whilst Japanese fans in Qatar might seem a bit extreme, most of Europe seems able to keep its public places tidy, clear of rubbish.
So why can't we ?
Reducing waste is a good aim.
The size of the fine is irrelevant if people are confident that they won't be caught so more measures to ensure more are caught are important too.
Absolutely, did you see the image of Japanese (I think it was) fans collecting the litter after a match in Qatar? I guess you did now I read your last comment! There is a cultural expectation that someone else clears it up from far too many UK citizens.
I can't think of a post that I have agreed with you more on, Harry (and I do actually agree with a fair proportion of many of your posts).

Whereas you can load your car and take your household waste free of charge your local plumber/glazier/other small business has to pay a hefty fee.
Definitely worse around this part of London since covid, although it was always bad. The one thing I have noticed is its now more building type rubbish ie brick rubble, plaster board, carpets, doors. Although also lots of the normal type of litter i.e McD/KFC bags, cigarette packets/buts, empty coffee cups. I'm assuming the building rubble is related to builders charging home owners to dispose of rubble during building work and simply dumping it and pocketing the money

On the contrary it made using the sites a doddle.
And most, from what I've seen, have kept the booking system in place.
By most, really I mean those I know and use, Bury and Sudbury.

In recent years, within the past say 7/8 years, I showed up at West Stow and there by the lay-by was a huge scattered pile of paint tins, just dumped alongside a wildlife reserve ffs.
It couldn't have looked more out of place.
These type of scum don't care and are only interested in maximising what profits they can from what jobs they can get.
Out here in north Suffolk fly tipping is an issue. People indiscriminately dump bin bags. Go down any small road around Thornham/Gislingham/Mellis and you will see rubbish either in bags or just strewn around. It’s certainly got worse over the last few years. People just don’t care.
