Come on Section 5 (middle block) of the Lower North (Sir Bobby) - crank it up 14:41 - Dec 12 with 4591 viewsunstableblue

No doubting that our manager wasn't happy with the edgy and silent atmosphere in the first half Saturday.

This is a team, manager and season for us to be really proud of, and really vocal about. Yes, we're not typically playing at our best for the 90mins at the moment, that will come again, but we're still seeing passages of football to make us purr. Of course we can debate that the team's energy needs to fire up the crowd, but it goes both ways.

Our group couldn't get season tickets in the lower North sadly, but we look on from the sides, stand for the game, and make noise throughout.

It was so noticeable on Saturday that section 6 really try to get the noise going but its isolated, and it was also clear that section 4 were also starting songs, and being vocal, even in the first half.

The middle block is dead, and only reacts to direct attacking action in front of them. And this wasn't just because of the sun, the cold and the early kick-off. This is a theme. Clear to see.

This is a manager and a project that could genuinely get us into the Premier League. McKenna thrives on positive fan support to the team.

And the lower North is the place for raucous support, not for spectating. If you're static, not making noise, are you sitting (hopefully standing) in the right stand? were you raucous in the 80s/90s? are you drinking 4 pints before kick-off?

This is an intentionally provocative post, and I place my safety helmet on in readiness for the response.

Buts its as clear as day that is a problem? would welcome sensible thoughts. And from those in that section... why is it so quiet and static?

Hesitates to press 'Add Football Thread'...

lol, not for spectating.

You buy a ticket to WATCH ipswich play another team. It it 100000% all about spectating.

Some wish to add to their experience by singing and clapping, some go further get wasted, sing, dance etc etc, each to their own.

But, the whole purpose of buying a ticket is to watch the game.

Not for the guys in front of me. Whom I have posted about before....they spend the entire match glued to their phones betting.

If a safe standing experiment were to be, say, one entire half of the Lower Cobbold (ie along the side of the pitch as opposed to behind the goal) do you think Section 6 and other more lively types would want to go? The acoustics of both the Sir Bobby & Sir Alf stands don't enhance the sound you guys make do they?

Lunchtime kicks offs have never been great for those requiring a decent atmosphere in the ground. More time for a few more beers and I’m sure the crowd would have been louder.

I have often wondered about those who have expressed their unhappiness with the atmosphere do to improve the situation during matches. It seems as though your lot were loud and everyone else kept quiet.

why should they? some may be sitting the same seat they've had since they were in their 30s and sang more than others, they've now go older, and maybe just fancy watching the game without singing and clapping. Surely that's upto them.

Some maybe young but just enjoy the game, some may not feel comfortable singing.

We would, but I’m not sure how much appetite there’d be amongst everyone else. I always wanted to start a section in A block cobbold as the acoustics are great under that roof, but I think that ship has sailed now.

They’ll install it in the lower north eventually if/when the cobbold is rebuilt I think. We’ve been trying to convince them to make it an open terrace instead of one for one rail seating when they do - the idea being that all the singers can then congregate together in the middle rather than still being stuck to a ‘seat’, and the same problems still remaining.

I get it, you want everyone to do what you do.

I know someone specific who sits in that stand and has been there for 30 odd years, I know he won't sing now, but he very much used to be part of the noise. Personally I don't think it's fair you're trying to tell people they aren't wanted in a stand that's been their home at PR for 30 odd years.

I hope they listen to you. Having an area that eveyone knows is for those who want to sing and be a little more exuberant is eminently sensible. The first match I took my son to was away at Scunthorpe under Roy Keane. He was 5 or 6. We sat with the home fans along one side overlooking the Town fans behind the goal. Even at that tender age he said one day he wanted to be over there with the loud, singing fans! He recognised instantly different kinds of fans prefer different styles of watching / supporting. Anyone who chose to go onto the open terrace would surely realise what kind of viewing they were opting for. If they opt for the one for one rail seating you will still get some bozos going in there wanting to sit down, despite there being thousands of seated options elsewhere! Also, should stop people standing in the proper seated areas too. If you choose a seated area, then sit down. Everyone's a winner. Keep up the excellent work of Blue Action, it has made such a diffrence.

I get that. The only place I ever wanted to watch the game from was the "north" stand to sing and shout for 90 minutes. I'm 57 and have just naturally progressed away to the cobbold. I still have my moments but would love to see the whole bottom section filled with people singing.

That’s always our point - we’re only wanting one 3,000 person area of the ground to be filled with people singing and backing the team. There’s 26,000 other seats in the ground those people that don’t want to sing could sit in.

As textbackup said yesterday, the view in the lower north is shïte, so if you’re not contributing to the atmosphere, why would you even want to sit there? Case in point that was mentioned on here a few weeks ago - there’s a group of OAP’s near us in S6 - they sit down the whole game, moan to stewards about the noise and movement, and generally look miserable every week. What do they get out of being there? Surely they’d be happier sitting in one of the side stands with peace and quiet and a decent view of the game…

The “I’ve sat in this seat for 30 years so why should I move?” attitude in my personal opinion is just selfish and detrimental to the team and club. If I ever get to the point that I don’t want to help drive the atmosphere anymore, I’ll move elsewhere to make way for someone that does.

I am from Liverpool and my old fella,, God rest his soul, spent his first 20 years watching Liverpool from the middle of the Kop from the mid 50s. When it all started to get a bit too rough and tumble he moved to the Main Stand. He hated it at first but gradually he began to love it. He was no longer really going for the great atmosphere, he was actually watching the game more closely instead of trying to keep himself upright or shaking the piss off of his shoes! It's a natural evolution for most. You would still get the odd OAP wanting to be in the thick of it but surely they could have no complaints that it was too loud or their view of the game wasn't perfect. In the last 10 years of his life he gave up his season ticket at Anfield and became a Tractor Grandad, coming to away games in the North we my son and I. We miss him.

No, for now we want just ONE sizeable section somewhere - anywhere - where the expectation is that the fans go nuts and generate an atmosphere. Hey, if that evolves into 30,000 singing in every 4 corner of the ground then great, but at no point have we (or anyone for that matter) ever said we demand that...

It's not about age, it's about attitude. There's a handful of blokes in the section in their late 40s/early 50s who give it loads. There was girl there in her 20s on the front rail on Saturday who outsang most of the section. But I don't think it's unrealistic - or unfair - to expect fans to migrate around the ground depending on age, circumstance or mindset. If today, tomorrow or in 20 years I get sick of this ultra caper and want to just watch the footy in peace, i'll have the decency to make way for the next generation to take on the baton...

I’ve always said Cobbold Block A would make a good singing section, noise would travel across the SBR easily.

The "I've sat here x years" argument just makes no sense whatsoever.

People's tastes change, as well as all manner of other things. If, for whatever reason, I suddenly found myself unable to climb the stairs to the upper tier, I wouldn't kick up a fuss and demand that the club make provisions to help me to my seat because 'that's where I've always sat'.

As you quite rightly point out, nobody sits/stands in the Lower SBR because of the view. Even if that's an accurate reason, or because it's one of the cheapest areas to have a ticket, there's always the Lower SAR if you're that way inclined.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Pretty sure that an open terrace wouldn't be possible under the Safe Standing Criteria here: https://sgsa.org.uk/licensedstanding/

Those grounds that still have terraces have them under 'grandfather' rights and I don't think you can downgrade to that - only upgrade to safe standing.

they might look miserable to you, but you dont know their feelings. They may have lost a son or daughter who used to sit with them in that area or a dear friend/partner and they don't want to move away from it, they have themselves have some form of disability that causes themselves problems with change. They may have good old moan, but deep down enjoy it, lets be honest the older you get the more personalities you end up having.

I think it's great working with the club doing what you're doing, and one day something will be sorted. BUT personally, feel posts like some within this thread, telling people why they shouldn't be sat someone is the wrong way to be going about it. The club and some of these supporters were there before you lot created your group.

There was a lovely picture the other day of a german club and sadly both fans passed away late in their years. Supporters around them put a cardboard cut out of them both and placed it in their 2 seats. That's how it should be, not hounding out supporters because they don't want to sing and be seen as just being miserable supporters etc.
