As someone who has followed town since the early 1980's, the team and names of the players of that generation between our title win and the early 1970's have been just that - names and photos.
Keep an eye out on youtube at the moment, there are loads of matches of ours that i've never seen before being uploaded.
Classic example, game vs West Ham in 70-71.. this is the first time i've seen footage of Peter Morris, Derek Jefferson & Jimmy Robertson. Think we were almost relegated this season, might have been one of the 'Robson Out!' seasons too.

No, only two teams got relegated (three teams from 1973/74) we were 7 points clear of Burnley in 21st place with Blackpool bottom.
At 2 points for a win, we were probably more comfortable than the final table indicates. Certainly more comfortable than our 12th place finish in 83/84 suggests!

I remember those days. I started watching Town in 1968 so this brings back some memories of good times, even though there was better to come! Thanks for posting!.

Thanks for posting - great to see some of my heroes from back then. No "playing it out from the back" in those days! Frank Clarke and Jimmy Robertson had arrived the season before and helped drag us up away from relegation - we'll never know how Town's history would have been affected if we'd gone down at that point. Peter Morris, never one to make a short pass when a long cross field defence splitter could be had. Always solid, scored some lovely goals - from outside the box of course. Mills, Bell and Chopper in defence - the latter always terrifying someone (sometimes us!). And, despite playing for them, Hurst and Moore were held in high regard for their efforts in 66. Plus of course, Frank Lampard (the original). I've come over all nostalgic!

Fantastic, thank you. It is interesting to note the differences to today, for good and bad. Awful pitch. One substitute. Note the total lack of advertising!

Good player, Peter Morris or Diesel as he was known. I think he would have had a longer career with us but for injury. Chopper Jefferson was a must have player. Every team had to have a hard player or two. Apparently his eyesight was terrible so he just walloped anything that moved. There was no rolling about in agony, imaginary red cards, simulation or going down at a touch in those days. It was full on.
Robertson was brilliant and Clarke was not - but the goals he scored proved vital. It was a tough, limited team in those days but they survived and from it came Robsons first great team.

I've said before on here that we were worried that young Beattie might not be strong enough and good enough to take over from Chopper. Perhaps we didn't need to worry!

Perhaps not! Beattie was extraordinary right from the off. For a teenager to be so strong, especially for those days, was ridiculous.
I rather liked Chopper. He enjoyed battering the opposition.

SBR spent ages trying to buy The late Willie Maddren from M’bro. Turned out we didn’t need him! Happy days.

And whilst clearly not as physical as Beattie, George Burley started his career at an even earlier age and instantly became a regular.
These days breaking into the first team as a teenager, and becoming a regular, tends to be the exception rather than the rule, which is perhaps strange given adolescents seem taller and stronger than way back then.

I was actually surprised by the number of times Sivell rolled it out to Hammond at RB, and how we played our way forward. As I remember it that that a feature of SBR’s early team - ability to really mix it up. We had some fine passers of the ball too - Collard, Morris and then the silky Viljoen.
Any idea why we let Jimmy Robertson go? Only played for us for 2 years and according to pride of anglia stats he was only 28 and went on to play for Stoke for another 5!

Wasn’t Moore suspended earlier that season for drinking in Blackpool and feeling it in the next days cup tie? Him and Greavsie!

Really interesting. Intriguing to see West Ham playing Hurst, Greaves and Pop Robson up front against shall we say a rather limited Town defence. also intriguing to see Clive Woods years before he established himself as a fixture in the side. Mick Hill was one of my favourite players at the time - the EADT was sure Robson was signing Tony Currie - and he came back with Mick Hill

I think that there was a release fee in his contract that was met by Stoke City

From what I can recall Mick Hill had his own song which involved a series of claps to a familiar rhythm followed by "Mick Hill".

A former town player made his football combination debut with a player from this match in 1970-71 and also played in Marcus Stewarts home debut. Who was it?
