Bolton…. Different gravy 09:15 - Mar 10 with 2959 viewsunstableblue

Enjoyed the wins against FGR, MK, Burton, and Accrington, where we concede zero and scored 12 goals… further strengthening our goal difference

And whilst MK and Burton showed some quality and endeavour… and I hope Burton can give Plymouth a bit of a test… Bolton will be a completely different level of test

They have threat and goals… have a ridiculous home record (haven’t lost at home in months, October).. they have high quality Liverpool and Man U loanees

We have a chance to create a great run of wins
And clean sheets… but could be a wake up call?

Win and a Plymouth loss at Barnsley and we’d be back on for automatic - reverse those ans it’s play-offs

But for me… a win to truly show this is real momentum to take into the play-offs would be massive

Show the naysayers in the fan base we can beat a rival

Was concerned to see talk of Luongo being rested - he’s the difference for me… he’s what we needed at Bristol away … hope he starts

The games against the PO positioned teams are the only ones I really care about now.
Beating utter sht like Accrington is just a job done. We need to show what we are made of against the teams we will face in the PO games. If we walk away from them with 2 draws and a loss the feeling going into the PO will be negative… however, a couple of wins and a draw and I’ll be really upbeat

I know what you're saying, however if we come away with a couple of wins and a draw against the PO positioned teams, then there's every likelihood that we'll go up automatically.

This is a big test for us for the bigger picture and if we have regained our form.

I do think the players we have got in have improved the team, it's unlikely to make a massive difference in the race for the top 2 but for the play offs it will help and going into next season.

If we stay down, a really good Centre back, and young midfielder 22-24 age range, a striker should be the targets imo.

Although arguably the reason we aren't closer to Plymouth and Wednesday is partly due to not getting the job done in home games v Fleetwood, Lincoln and Cheltenham. Never play down a win of any sort.

But more to the point, we never win in the league when we concede! (not since 10th Dec)

Surely we're well beyond the notion (now merely hope) that Argyle will lose form and drop enough points for us to overtake, unless we pretty much win all our remaining games. Their run-in is relatively straightforward; their home form is magnificent; they are spawny.

Tomorrow is massively exciting though (cue a Town draw and an Argyle win), arf. Nah...

Exactly this. The name of the game is to not worry about them and their record or the other teams. Go in knowing we are better than them and proving it. Go for it!

Not arguably, that’s absolutely true, facts.

I’m certainly not playing down a win, I think I just have an eye on what we can achieve in the PO

I think it's really important we go to Bolton tomorrow and put in a performance, a statement win would really put the cat amongst the pigeons and demonstrate we're capable of beating the sides in the top 6. It's 'in our hands' in so much as if we win our games there's no way we wouldn't finish in the top 2. Mathematically there's a way, but in reality there's no way 102 points wouldn't be enough.

Now we won't win all our games, clearly, but neither will anyone else. If we're sat on 72 points by 5pm tomorrow with 10 games left to play and that tricky away day out of the way then we'll certainly be in the mix. I don't really buy this easy run in that Plymouth supposedly have. Their finish looks nice, but before that 5 of their next 7 in the league are away, long and difficult trips to Barnsley, Accrington, Morecambe and Shrewsbury. And a derby at Exeter. Lincoln at home isn't a gimme either, they've only lost once in 2023. None of them are easy games. Plus they have the distraction of a Wembley match in the mix for the Pizza Cup. 8 games and a lot of travel in a 38 day period.

If we do our job then I'll be very surprised if we're not at least right on their coat tails by mid April, if not better. By 'our job' I think that needs to be something like 6 wins from the next 7 which is a big ask given our fixtures, but would feel slightly less of an ask if it's 5 from 6 by 5pm tomorrow.

More I think about it the more vital it is to win this one.

Bolton are not in great shape right now (drew at Morecambe, lost at Portsmouth, pretty fortunate to sneak past Port Vale at home, lost at Wycombe). Of the 4 tough away games we have left, this is probably one of the easier ones. Meanwhile Plymouth have their toughest remaining fixture.

My hunch is that we've fixed some of the problems we had over December/January. Luongo in midfield has made us far more robust. He lands on second balls, he tracks runners, all of which makes us less prone to conceding the kind of goals we gave up at Wycombe and Cambridge. We've added another consistent and composed finisher in Broadhead, we've developed ways of going back to front quicker when the situation demands it.

We've shown that's true against weaker opposition of late but we won't really know how true it is that we've gone up a level until we've done it against better teams. Deservedly beat Bolton and we look and feel like a team that can sprint to the line and hopefully also end the day only 2-3 points off 2nd. Fail to win and we feel like flat track bullies, who aren't going to get nearly enough points from the 6 remaining games against top 10 opponents to undo the damage done in our long Winter.

I just hope Cameron Jerome doesn’t play as we have a horrible habit of scum and ex-scum players scoring against us, Agent Mumba being just one recent example.

To put another slant on things, Bolton fans should be looking at the game and thinking, "s**t!, Town are on a cracking run and if we lose again we could drop out of the play-offs soon".

We shouldn't worry about going there, or Barnsley, or Derby as we are every bit as good - if not better - than these teams. We have the ability to win all 3 games, whether we have the mentality to do so is a different story.

Tomorrow is a chance to make a statement of intention for the run-in.

I don’t agree about these difficult matches against Morecambe and Accrington.

They are absolutely awful and Plymouth should comfortably win.
