Car deals 19:29 - Apr 24 with 1952 viewsMullet

Looking likely I'll need a new one soon. Unlikely I'd be able to buy outright, but looking for a family car, hybrid most likely, low mileage/new or nearly new for a decent deal.

Are there any particular brands or deals about? I got my Skoda on finance with 0% APR but that seems a thing of the past looking around.

Thanks in advance TWTD hivemind

Don’t buy it Mullet, it’s got a hole in it.

My daughter just bought a Nissan Qashqai from Fords of Winsford, who have a branch in Manchester as well as Winsford, they are a car supermarket type outlet and I believe they do finance as well, the price you see is what you pay, no haggling and no hard sell, they have some really nice cars. They really like the comfort and way it drives and would recommend one.

I wouldn't say that, but the Toyota Yaris is also a lovely car to drive and is a bit smaller than the Qashqai.

Mrs C has a Toyota Yaris. It is a lovely car and spot on for our needs. We’ve owned lots of Toyotas over the years and never had a hint of a problem. Great cars. Really well made.

My car, a necessity at the moment and an indulgence, is an Audi A3. I love it. Naughty fast, economical, fun and practical. It’s coming up to a year old and I reckon needs the noisy aircon fan looking at - the kind of problem I’ve never had with the Toyotas or the two Hondas that preceded the Audi. Oh well, I still love it.

Had an Mazda some years ago and that was good - Overall, Jap cars take some beating, though my mate swears by Uncle Henry’s products and I have to say his two year old Focus is lovely..

You don’t get bad cars these days tbh. Just identify something that fits your needs and find the best one you can is my opinion.

It's sometimes cheaper to get a brand new one as second hand prices are crazy. Shop around for the best deals.

Genuinely surprised to see people liking the Toyota Yaris here. We have them as our pool cars at work, and they are bloody dreadful, and I say that as someone who has always owned small cars.

I guess you take as you find. Each to their own n all that. Mrs C has had three Yaris’ and couple of Starlets in the past 24 years and not one thing has gone wrong with any of them. They are not exciting or exotic in any way shape or form - they just do the job. The current 19 plate has been all over the country but spends most of the time as a runabout.

Put it this way, my ski buddy swears by Renault Clio’s but not only has his gone wrong a fair amount, the also have a vomit inducing ride - I used to avoid the pool car Megane like the plague. The Fords and Vauxhalls were far nicer. The Honda Jazz my dad has is quite nice and again bullet proof reliability and function wise. I personally don’t enjoy driving it, unlike the two Honda Civics I had which were fine. Hired a couple of Hyundai’s abroad and they were alright though the gear ratios on both didn’t feel right. Most cars these days are decent as far as I can see, unlike the good ole days.

The first thing these days is actually determining what you want it for. In other words size. Cars are getting ever bigger for some unearthly reason. After that, which make/model you like and finally new or second hand. The crazy second hand market means new is worth considering, if the budget allows and if you go for that, check the wait times.

It is probably worth adding the caveat that our work pool cars are almost certainly the lowest of low spec, so maybe not a fair representation.

They always are! Part of my first job in the Civil Service 20 years ago was to manage some pool cars, which was quite fun. They were all poverty spec, but ok. The Focus’ were the best to drive but I actually preferred the Vauxhall Corsas for tootling around London. Smashing cars.

In a previous life I was given a BMW 3 series for some months. Lovely; real quality and fun - but the offset pedals gave me dreadful backache. I think it was due to the cars being designed for driving on the wrong side of the road, but I don’t have that problem with my Audi all these years on - modern car progress!!

My boss made me drive his bmw3 on a long trip once. We swapped at the service station. I got in accelerated onto the motorway then because of this offset pedals couldn't find the brake and nearly drove into the car in front.

It was semi funny but I had a right sweat on.

And what about the Ford Puma (Mullet)

Someone told me a few years ago to buy Japanese for safety and build quality. He was an experienced mechanic and said with Japanese cars you're getting German build quality, but typically not paying German brand prices.

Not sure if it meets the definition of 'family car' as might be too small but the Honda Jazz is a very well built and reliable car. For something bigger I've heard good things about the Nissan Qashqai. Probably looking at the best part of £20k for something nearly new and low mileage but it feels like a lot of car for the money.

Someone mentioned Kia already (Korean, not Japanese) and while I've never owned one so can't vouch for them, they come with a 7 Year or 100,000 mile guarantee which seems pretty good.

Depending where you work. have you checked if there's a salary sacrifice offer? Becoming more common, as it allows companies to "do their bit" for the environment, by encouraging employees to go greener.

If you are thinking of leasing a new car, its worth seeing if you can get your business to offer it, as you can pay it pre-tax. Obviously, you need to go with a hybrid of full electric to make it work though, or the BIK tax will kill you.

Modern Beemers dont have that problem. My 4 series has a comfy driving position. Getting out of it is the tricky part, it's quite low to the ground.
