7K. With a cap on season tickets of 21k there's just enough room to squeeze everyone in if the Cobbold is closed for redevelopment then.

Not suggesting its imminent, but the figures match up is all I'm saying.

A new main stand could cost £100m+. Rather put that into the first team budget.

I think you're reaching! If that was the case, do you really think the club would have sold the seats in that stand?

I don't think Chelts is saying thinking in the next 1-2 years. I would be very against losing a stand for much/all of a season anytime soon tho! Would kill the fan momentum.

I don't think it's too far fetched. Even if the development of the Cobbold is a longer term plan.

If we sell 23K season tickets, then there is the risk that, when the time comes, you have to tell 2000 season ticket holders that they no longer have a seat. Surely it's much easier to cap the number of season tickets now so that if/when the time comes, it is easier to just relocate people for a season?

That's the suggested cost of Crystal Palace's new stand but they are throwing everything at it - museum included.

Was mentioned on one of the podcasts recently as a possibility over next few years.

They'll look at the business data too and there's probably a known golden ratio. Demographics of season ticket holders vs OTD punters and their spending behaviours are different, not to mention the additional price on the ticket if you can sell them. Then as a business, if non-ST holders can't attend games your customer base can't grow and attract new interest.

70% seems mid-upper end of the scale from limited internet data. Having said that, I've just seen West Ham sold a whopping 55,000 ST's of 62,500 capacity.

The North Stand cost £25m, 20 years ago. The main stand is clearly bigger and would need to be a much higher specification, including conference and hospitality areas.

The new Everton stadium is going to be circa £750m, so a half decent new main stand for £100m feels ball park about right.

I mean I’ve got no idea how much these things cost, sounds a lot though. If we got 6,000 extra seats in there we would be lucky to stick an additional £2.5m of annual revenue on the top line. Not a very compelling payback.

Can’t see it happening any time soon anyway.

Wasn’t the £25m for both Sir Bob and Sir Alf? Originally was going to be paid over 25 years I think until administration and then Evans take over. Would agree with £100m as a ball park for a new stand to replace cobbold as they’d make it as big as possible to put back further work to other areas of the ground. Mind you would depend on what would be put into the stand, hotels add a bit for instance!

According to the architects’ website, it was £9 million for the North Stand.

You might be right, it could have been the figure for both. £25m may have been the debt we took on to redevelop the ground.

That said a new stand to replace the Cobbold will not be cheap, and MA has spoken about it only making sense if it is sufficiently versatile to provide commercial use outside match days.

What is interesting is MA talking about a multi-stakeholder discussionn about developing the footprint around the ground for mutual benefit. That is the right discussion to be had.

These things usually work better with an additional facility like a hotel or other element as part of the deal but that side of the ground obviously limited horizontal space

I wonder how much further back a new stand would need to go.

Most clubs cap season tickets if they're regularly selling out the stadium. Selling match day tickets means more money per ticket and more fans getting to see the club live (helps develop your fanbase long terms, build more connections to the club, gets a broader base of people spending money on merchandise and all that).

As an e.g. Arsenal cap at 45k season tickets, roughly 3/4 of the capacity of the Emirates.

A replacement stand is necessary and it’s only a matter of time. It is clear that Ashton is mentioning it regularly now, unprompted in interviews, that isn’t an accident. It is clearly going to cost a lot of money, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we see it starting within the next 2-3 years. For that to happen they need to be making preparatory moves behind the scenes which are ongoing.

That's not far fetched. The complexity of having to build over Portman Road too, and the loss of revenue for at least one season. Where to put the away supporters? A planning nightmare I should think!

Posted this on another thread but I suspect this is to put pressure on the council to grant planning permission - this adds value to the club without them actually having to do anything. See Abramovich at Chelsea - I doubt he ever intended to build the new stadium but the various planning approvals he got added significant value.

I think if we get established in the PL in next 3-4 years GC will sell up and make a big profit without the hassle of building anything but having got the permission to do so.

There has to be an application in planning for planning permission to be granted, which, currently, there isn't.

I think a few are reading into this far more than was intended. All I'm really saying is that that number on the ST cap (21k) seems deliberate if the capacity of a demolished Cobbold is 7k. All season ticket holders get to keep a seat.

Ashton is regularly mentioning it now, which makes me think it is in active development, possibly even to the stage of asking preparatory drawings being drawn up but that wouldn't be unusual for a plan with a activation point still 2-3 years away.

I just think the 21k cap is intentional based on future planning.
