Feeling horribly conflicted. 12:11 - May 28 with 3572 views | BanksterDebtSlave | Currently spending a lot of time assisting Junior Slave into a life of debt slavery. Today was chosing hall's or residence for her first year training to be a mental health nurse. She is literally going to be paying through the nose for the rest of her working life for the pleasure of working in the public sector. There really is no such thing as society any more.

I think that sort of thing, along with other medical stuff and possibly other courses that I have literally given no thought to should be reimbursed after 5 years staying in the job**** ****With some finer details put in somewhere obviously.

Couldn't agree more.....maybe a rolling scale through the decades at the very least.

Know it wouldn’t be popular with Universities but there are a lot of non technical courses than could be done in two years instead of three. Almost part time degrees .

Gratitude is, I believe, currently paid at the rate of 10 pot bangs a week. I hope she spends them wisely.

Feeling horribly conflicted. on 14:38 - May 28 with 2356 views | lowhouseblue | hopefully she'l have a good time, she'll get work options she might not otherwise have had, other unexpected directions may emerge with choices and chances she might not otherwise have had. who knows where it may lead. hopefully in the end she'll also earn more. i'm not sure degree courses are right for everything and everyone but i can see the logic for nursing and it's an exciting chance to see where it takes her. i wouldn't get fixated on the maths of it all at this point.
| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

Indeed, who knows where the first step can lead. For example, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kent is a nurse https://www.kent.ac.uk/office-vice-chancellor/vice-chancellor I also know a former A&E nurse who is now a doctor. Whatever happens, well done to the young lady for following her dream. [Post edited 28 May 2023 14:57]

I haven’t told her about this thread yet but I will when she has a break from revising, she will love it! I am obviously very proud of her and her choices but that doesn't alter my view that she should not be going into debt to follow that dream. Ironically after getting my state funded degree one of my first arrests was at an anti student loan demo. To think that the state got the benefits of my geography knowledge at no personal cost and she will be paying off debt for 40 years to be a nurse! As for supportive...she's going en fekkin suite!

It will certainly be an eye opener after rural Suffolk. Sheffield is a great city and location too.

"But Dad, I just want to have a relaxed easy shower when I'm on placement....and I do get an extra £1,000 on my bursary for doing mental health." *resigned sigh* Same to your girl too. Strange feeling watching them stretch their wings isn't it.

Indeed it is...especially as they are the group who had their social development and academic wings clipped by the lockdown era. Coincidentally my first proper proper girlfriend trained as a RMN on the Project 2000 course in Ipswich back in the late 80's early 90´s .. last I heard 20 odd years ago she was pretty high up the ladder,God knows how high she is now.

It's not just paying for the courses, it is paying a decent wage once qualified too. For all the Government's driving down public sector wages, they are prepared to pay £10,000 relocation grant for foreign teachers to come here instead. Well done Junior Slave and I hope her career lifetime sees multiple governments that value her service financially and not just in claps.
