Splendid. Although I'm not sure how I feel about Broad Jr being introduced as a veteran bowler.

Going along at 6 an over, without even looking like they are trying, just putting away the bad balls, and being positive in strokeplay.

This is buffet bowling though.

Depends how many runs England rack up, could get the first session at least tomorrow.

I was at Lord's yesterday, rarely known the contrast in temperature between a really cool morning and four hours of roasting sun in the afternoon. Some decent stuff on show _ Broad mainly, but I liked what I saw of Tongue and McCollum and Stirling made things interesting - but Ireland very much suffering from not playing red ball cricket. Their 50 over World Cup qualifier coming up soon is understandably more important at the moment.

Doesn't help when you rest your best bowler for the WC.

Getting the feeling a declaration is imminent. 260 odd ahead. Could be plenty of time for Ireland to be 5 or so down at the close. ECB may need to consider more Friday starts as long as this Stokes/McCullum pairing continues.

Can't declare before Pope gets 200.

It's only a 'test' by scheduled duration isn't it? This is no contest and certainly no test of England.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

England have been in that situation plenty of times over the years. Ireland will only get better at Test cricket by playing more of it.

There have always been weak Test countries, but Ireland are nowhere near Test level. THey wanted to be included so that their best players didn't play for England (Morgan, Joyce) but they don't have anything like the playing base ever to become competitive. A pointless warm up for the Ashes, which will obviously be very different.

I don't agree it's a pointless test match, we've tried some debutant bowlers for the inevitable when Jimmy & Broad retire debate, the top order have got some confidence boosting runs. Playing at Lords is tough whatever the opposition, its the perfect warm up game imo, Ireland haven't rolled over in their 2nd innings.

And I say again Ireland will not improve their red ball cricket if they aren't given these games to play, if the hierarchy of cricket just view them as white ball specialists, that's bad for the game overall and it's bad for them.

England have gone into that annoying 'keep bowling it short for way too long' mode.
