As I understand it he was offered a contract as a way of ensuring we got compensation from whoever takes him on when he turns it down.

I've yet to see him linked anywhere. I guess there's still a chance he gets cold feet and signs the contract in which case I'd assume we'd loan him out somewhere next season?

He was linked with West Ham a while back. No idea whether there is still any interest.

I can't see him signing in any circumstance. I'm sure he'll get a club somewhere along the line, whether before the end of the window or otherwise.

They were very interested last summer, from what I gather offers were made but they were derisory.

Has there been a falling out then? Or he's just made his mind up to move on?

Its a real shame, he looks to have a lot of talent, arguably the pick of that U23 side, but I guess he plays in a position that we are already pretty strong in and looking to strengthen further still, so his future probably does lie elsewhere.

RIP Sir Bobby

Presumably we only get something if he signs for an English club.

I think FIFA training compensation would be due if he goes abroad.

Silly boy! Sounds a bit like young Simpson to me. I guess that it's possible he'll be picked up by some middling league 1 team. But why leave ITFC at a time when we're only going in one direction? I know he's down the pecking order, but he's still young and staying here would allow him to really push himself on as he learns from a really good manager, coaching staff and talented group of players that are only going to improve.

Sounds to me like he's getting some dodgy advice - unless he's happy to just pick up £3k a week as a middling league one player all his career. I mean, I'd love £3k a week - but if I were a footballer I'd like to think I'd be wanting to push myself and see how far I can go.

I watched him in pre-season last summer and he looked very lightweight. No great surprise really, the step up between U23s and the first team is very steep, as Cam H has found out this season.

The challenge most U23s have is securing loan deals that enable them to bridge the gap between youth and men's footballl. Even when they get loans, they often do not work out (Baggott at Cheltenham, Nbada at Burton etc.).

Without sufficient senior matches under their belt, they can soon become yesterday's potential and blocking the development of younger players, who may make the step up.

Maybe he realises that with the direction ITFC are heading his chances will be limited? Yes, he maybe talented but he’d have to be ruddy good to get into any future Town teams.

Town only offered him a contract so that they can get some kind of fee.

He's a long, long way away from £3K/week.

Indeed. With our upward trajectory, high ambition and fairly hefty financial backing we’re in a completely different territory re: young players and their development than we’ve been for the last decade.

We’re back to the days where 1 or 2 home-grown youngsters might break through every year into the wider squad but even that’s highly optimistic.

Young ITFC players just won’t get the chances they used to as those opportunities were largely based on necessity and very tight budgets. As a group, they’ll be the victims of our success unless they can go above and beyond to prove themselves in training or out on loan.

So I can’t blame Simpson and likely Chirewa if they effectively can have the same overall situation at a new club but probably earning a lot more for the next couple of years at least.

CH did really well under the circumstances but was/is not yet ready to be a regular starter. He only got the run he did due to our injury crises. The loss of Camara/Ball/Evans was a big factor in our mid season dip in form.

We were a much better side once Luongo came into the side. It also enabled Morsy to impose himself more on the game and not have to babysit Cam.

CH is technically a very gifted player in a boys body. He has time to grow and develop the physical side of the game, he is not there yet. It is not a criticism of CH, it is very rare to find a 19 year old who can play central midfield in L1 week in week out.

I think it's very subjective what constitutes good advice for a teenage footballer really.

From reports at the time after the Swindon loan we didn't especially rate Simpson and offered him a wage commensurate with a youth player (lower, for instance, than what Dobra and El Mizouni were on). It would have been a better wage at Huddersfield and a club that rated him enough to make an investment. Whether it ultimately works out or not, it's an understandable decision.

If Chirewa's agent is getting interest from Category 1 Premier League academy, lots of good reasons for him to explore that.

That loans thing you mention - we seem to have had quite a few youngsters who have hit the buffers due to loan spells not going well for one reason or another - suggests to me that many younger players would be better off staying at Town under the coaching regime we have at the moment, or at most doing a half season loan deal, with some sort of option to cancel if not getting match time.

The younger players that we see emerging now were probably recruited during the Evans era when standards and criteria maybe weren’t as high as they are today. It will be interesting to see if any of the more recent crop of youngsters have a better outcome.

I don't agree with you reference Humpreys I think he done fantastic in a team that was decimated with injuries if it had gone to plan he would have had more selected game time and has a bright future here I even think championship football may suit him more than league one a intelligent player who works hard.
