How do we feel about this team for Sunderland 21:49 - Aug 1 with 3600 viewsunstableblue

Hladky
Donacien Wolfenden Burgess Davis
Morsy Taylor
Burns Chaplin Hutchison
Hirst

It relies on Donacien and Taylor putting in a performance

But it’s a set of players who in the main know each other very well and buy into the system

Perhaps Harness got Hutchison and Evans for Taylor a possibility.

Hladky has looked good in pre season

Broadhead will start, Hutchinson on the bench.

edit: and it relies on EVERYONE putting in a performance. As always.

Feel less confident than I would with Broadhead and Walton

Also feel like Jackson would start. Seems like the sort of game McKenna has utilised Jackson in.

I've no idea where Hutch played in the previous games. Bur he looked lost in the broadhead role on Friday.

Think it'll be harness for broadhead with hutch on bench.

a niche perspective

Broadhead in for Hutchison injury permitting. Other than that, yes feel good, these are very good players. But I'm prepared to lose the first game of the season away at a high flying Championship team in an intimidating stadium, and not panic.

That’s remarkably harsh. He played against Rb Leipzig ffs

I actually thought he asked a few questions of them in the limited times he had the ball but his final pass wasn’t perfect which is to be expected against one of the best teams in Europe pre season or not.

It's not harsh. He's a raw lad and he looks like he will be a great player. But in comparison to broadhead and harness imo he looked lost, didn't link with others that well. That's not about the opponent. He just didn't imo show the same level of understanding of the role. That's not harsh.

He will get there but for first game. I'd go harness.

It’s early to be making these calls based on unconfirmed reports. If Walton, Luongo, Broadhead don’t make the game perhaps Ball CMf for greater control otherwise Taylor and Harness AMf role for his getting stuck in and poacher goal attributes.

Just watched the 101 goals on Town TV.. and Harness banged in some nice goals

I think Ball has had a very strong pre-season and would play well in CM and RB

Edwards would also not let us down

Don’t forget Aluko and Jackson

And I’ll put this out there - Baggot has played against Argentina in front of a crowd of 56,500

Sunderland lost 5-2 to non-league Hartlepool tonight. Not sure if mostly reserves and yoofs. Match report here if you can make it pass the endless fking pop-ups. 2023 and they’re still a thing.

Even with a few injuries, our squad has good depth so we still have some tough decisions to make about who to leave out of the matchday squad (9 subs this year). My guess is :

Hladky

JD Woolfy Burgess Davis

Burns Morsy Taylor

Chaplin Broadhead

Hirst
Subs:
Slicker
Ball
Leigh
Baggott
Edwards
Jackson
Hutchinson
Ladapo
Harness
So assuming Walton, Massimo and Clarke are all injured (and that Broadhead is ok) this is still leaving Fridge, Evans, Humphries, Aluko out of the squad. I'm pretty comfortable with that, and that is with no further incomings.

If Broadhead is injured then we bring in Harness, who has had an excellent pre season.

I think Broadhead and Luongo will start.

Hutchinson didn't look lost in that game whatsoever. We were just playing RB Leipzig who dominated the ball for large parts. He had a decent game and looked at threat. Made a mess of the one v one but that was about all he did wrong. He would be fine there. I do agree he might be off the bench rather than starting given his lack of experience.

Harness has looked good in preseason and think his workrate and understanding of our shape and system would come in handy if Broadhead isn't fit, Hutchinson and Edwards to come on and have an impact off the bench. I'd also be tempted to go with Ball over Taylor with Taylor coming on to add some drive if needed. Even if none of the injury doubts make it for Sunday, that's still a strong line up and with good options to have an impact off the bench too.

I'd not feel too confident, whilst that is a very good League One team, I have major doubts over them competing with the likes of Sunderland in the Championship.

Bring back Walton, Clarke, Luongo, Broadhead it looks a lot better, add the 2/3 signings Ashton talks about, we are there.

I think Luongo too for continuity, with Taylor gradually integrating into the team via subs appearances.

That said, somebody suggested he is also injured?

Sunderland will likely be fielding several players who featured for them in League 1. They've strengthened, but I don't think the squad they went up with was as good as ours (and our respective League 1 performances would back that up), and they've lost their best player from last season in Amad Diallo. Much as people are cautioning against underestimating the step up in the Championship, we also need to be mindful of not overestimating it too.

Not sure we're gonna freeze the Fridge out of the squad in favour of Baggott.

Indeed, not so long ago that we competed with them well enough with a team that had Bonne and Norwood up front and Matt Penney at Left Wing Back. There are still a dozen players from that Sunderland squad still around.

All away games are tough (most Championship teams won fewer than 1 in 3 games on the road last season), but whatever team we can put out will show up organised and competitive, whether or not we're missing a few.

Indeed. Because we were so dominant in games last season I think people forget how good we are tactically as a defensive unit, particularly with our shape. We showed it in the tricky away games in the run in and when McKenna first took charge, and again in the friendly against Leipzig. The Burnley games (I know they don't really count) also showed our defensive nous really well last season. It's hard to see anyone having an easy time against us.

Not sure Hutchinson will start. But might come of the bench last 10-15 minutes..... He's a kid with very little first team experience, and they'll be 40k crowd, mostly hostile..
Think Harness will get the nod if Broadhead is out. He's looked quite sharp pre season... We might even look to bring experience off the bench, in the shape of Aluko, for instance.
Lots of thoughts knocking about. Be interesting to see who is deemed available, and how we set up for a tough away game in this division.
