Rotterdam - worth visiting for a city break? 15:36 - Oct 17 with 2451 views | giant_stow | Mrs ullaa is strangely drawn to it, but my ignorant prejudice says its going to be nothing more than a post-war concrete port.

Rotterdam - worth visiting for a city break? on 15:52 - Oct 17 with 2368 views | jontysnut | Yes. It's not touristy but there's plenty to do. There's an old harbour plus cutting edge modernism. Do a Feyenoord tour, a boat trip, eat in the food market. There's a metro so it's easy to get around and if you run out of things you can get to lots of other towns with canals and windmills quickly and cheaply.
Rotterdam - worth visiting for a city break? on 15:56 - Oct 17 with 2353 views | NthQldITFC | I had to look it up as there's so much to remember, but Ipswich beat Feyenoord 2-1 in Rotterdam in 1975 in the UEFA Cup. Of course we beat them at Portman Road too, 2-0. I say of course, but we could have drawn I suppose. We couldn't have lost though, because we've never lost at home in European football in 30+ games, as you know. Hope that helps! (I must admit I do feel a bit of a wanchor typing that, even though I know you take it in good spirits like the fine chap you are. Oddly, I feel more of a wanchor because we've finally regained our rightful position in the hierarchy. Finally.)

Thank you - had a feeling I was being harsh! If I get told we're going there, I now won't dread it.

We went to one for the lols. Oddly, the audience was full of Japanese tourists - men and women. They were loving it. [Post edited 17 Oct 2023 16:06]

Rotterdam - worth visiting for a city break? on 15:59 - Oct 17 by giant_stow | haha! It was Feynoord that got us thinking of it - the boy wants to catch a game on the continent, but I fear tickets there woul be hard to get. [Post edited 17 Oct 2023 16:02]

Good luck getting the tickets, and I hope you all have a splendid time there if you do go. I've never been to Rotterdam myself (far too young for the above-mentioned era as it was dim and distant history) only Amsterdam, and I was always too stoned there to appreciate the city really.

Rotterdam - worth visiting for a city break? on 16:33 - Oct 17 with 2203 views | artsbossbeard | Had a couple of days/nights there and really enjoyed the place. Decent food, shopping & things to look at. The Euromast is worth a visit as are the little cube houses. It's quite "earthy" as a destination but easy to get to. Would recommend.

Rotterdam - worth visiting for a city break? on 16:41 - Oct 17 with 2146 views | brazil1982 | We visited very briefly in March -= ferry from Hull>Rotterdam on the Friday, Saturday around the city, back Saturday / arrive Sunday morning. It is pleasant enough for a day's visit, or perhaps two days, we didn't see all we planned to. The highlight for me was the Pinball Museum where you get to play over 100 machines included with the admission fee!

Rotterdam - worth visiting for a city break? on 16:58 - Oct 17 with 2095 views | exeterblue10 | You're both a bit right I reckon. Big post-war rebuild so doesn't feels as historic as Amsterdam but definitely worth a visit. Haven't been for a few years but I'm remembering a nice walk from Central Station to the harbour along a canal via an art museum designed by Rem Koolhaas, going up the Euromast, a spectacular bridge by Calatrava, a boat trip to Hotel New York (which is a good place for a bite to eat but I'm guessing pricey to stay at), the old harbour, and a very sketchy area around Feyenoord's stadium. The Markthal wasn't built when I went but looks like its worth a visit - designed by MDRDV architects (who also designed the Balancing Barn near Halesworth). Only been a couple of times but both times were in the spring and it was freezing!

Rotterdam - worth visiting for a city break? on 18:27 - Oct 17 with 1965 views | PrideOfTheEast | It’s ok. Not sure it warrants much more than a couple of days but if that’s what you’re after then all good. If you’re going for longer plenty of other cities in close proximity for a day trip, including Antwerp.
Rotterdam - worth visiting for a city break? on 18:30 - Oct 17 with 1955 views | BLUEBEAT | I love Holland but have to say not too keen on Rotterdam. If you want to keep away from the usual places, I would totally recommend Utrecht. Like a small Amsterdam without the prices and sleaze. Fabulous architecture, loads of restaurants, the usual beautiful canals… I want to go back now.

I crewed on a trimaran across to Ijmuiden/Amsterdam a long time ago and it was a very hairy crossing with lost backstays and other failures. I remember hearing "Scheveningen Rah-dee-oh, Scheveningen Rah-dee-oh" on the VHF as we approached the coast at about 2am, thinking it was the last words I was going to hear. Seeing that place name again put a real shiver up my spine. We nearly smashed into the central mole in the harbour as well, which was terribly badly lit at the time.

Had a couple of days in Utrecht - it was ok but with all the students bombing around on bikes was almost too busy. I'm still amazed that none of our number didn't get flattened. A more relaxed time was had in Leiden, which has got canals and windmills but was a bit quieter. Mind you I am an old gimmer now so I crave quiet rather than buzz.
