The 19 signings we made in the first gamechanger summer 09:18 - Jan 25 with 10509 viewsitfcjoe

There was always talk about how some were Cook, and some were Ashton.....here is my attempt at splitting them up and hits/misses

Ashton
Burns - hit
Harper - Miss
Hladky - Hit
Pigott - Miss
Fraser - Miss
Edmundson - Hit
Edwards - Miss
Barry - Miss
Celina - Hit

Cook
Evans - Miss
Chaplin - Hit
Burgess - Hit
Morsy - Hit
Bonne - Hit
Coulson - Miss
Walton - Hit

Don't know
Penney - Miss
Aluko - Hit
Carroll - Miss

Obviously other factors at play - i.e. Cook will have given his own players more chances than those more foisted upon him because he no doubt thought they were better players.

And some of the signings were hits because of McKenna as opposed to Cook - i.e. Burgess

I’d add Morsy and Chaplin to the list with Burgess, McKenna has taken them to a whole new level which I’m certain Cook wouldn’t have done.

Possibly a bit harsh on Edwards and Evans

And I'm sure most thought Coulson looked decent until the injury.

Can't argue with any others

I'd wager that Edwards and Evans were hits for our League 1 campaign(s)... or at least not complete misses.

So Ashton is actually quite terrible at recruitment.

That doesn't give me confidence for this week Joe lol.

Ahadme also has to go under the Ashton pot, no way was that a KM signing

Also Bonne, still don't think you can call him a Hit, solely because it was a long term loan and he was only good for a qtr of it. so for me it has to be a miss.

Evans was a hit and due to injury and luongo has lost out but every time he played he was very good.

Think it's hard to say definitively who was responsible for who, but broadly that's probably right.

Biggest flops of all of those have to be Harper and Pigott when you consider the relative investments by way of fee / salaries. Fraser cost a bit but it sounds like we got most of it back and we corrected it fairly promptly.

Can't win them all though. On balance its a significant net hit when you consider the value some of those have and will continue to add.

Can't disagree generally although I think it's perhaps harsh to put Evans and Edwards in the same miss category as the rest. Both were free transfers and made decent contributions. I'd probably have them in a 'par' category with Aluko (for on pitch impact) and Celina - he did ok, but not sure we really saw the absolute star quality we expected in L1.

Edwards I would probably agree. He's a middling one, signed on a free and left on a free so no real harm done. He was a handy player last season and made a few really notable contributions, not least Cambridge at home which springs to mind as well as Port Vale. Among the ridiculous end to the season we had that's a win that often gets overlooked, that was absolutely massive and I thought he changed the game when he came on, he was heavily involved in the build up for the penalty which won it for us.

It's difficult calling bonne a hit, he did well until around October that season but did he score again after that as all i recall is seeing him stray offside constantly

Coulson looked decent until he got injured.

Edwards also had injury issues, and could never quite get a run in the team.

But of all the misses, I would say Fraser was the biggest disappointment - he was clearly a good footballer, but we didn't find / play a way to get the best out of him.

Yeah, never lived up the initial hype perhaps and nowhere near as influential as other attackers but certainly had his moments as you say.

Good to see more recognition of Evans' quality though. Simplistic to put it down to one player but no surprise we looked much much better once Luongo came in for him - several times the player he is and offers so much more. The odd pretty cross field pass doesn't make up for slowing us down to snail pace by demanding to have the ball all the time and taking 48 touches before moving it on and leaving us exposed by by jumping in too early for a tackle and getting done.

Very harsh on Evans. Id say more hit than miss. Injuries both seasons have done for him.

But what makes you so sure who is the Ashton list and who was cook?

However it's cut Evans for the large part has flopped here. He's been injured for half of it, and when fit he's generally been poor. 10 or so decent appearances in 3 years isn't value for money, or what we would've hoped for of a senior signing.

Agree, a dozen games looking decent against some of the biggest dross League One can serve up doesn't come close to 'hit' territory.

Think it's a bit generous to give Celina to Ashton given he was at the club years before Ashton arrived. Very little spade work required for that one!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Looks like a near 50% of Hit to Miss.. how does that rank as a clubs recruitment set up? a fair split?

Quite agree. It's only those ten or so matches that keep from being as big, and an expensive, failure as Pigott.

I wonder, given the three year contracts, how much impact tidying up that mess has on our FFP situation this season. Probably not that much but still an impact.

How did you apportion the players to each person - is it where the original conection was (e.g. Morsy wanting to play for Cook)?

Basically a combination of what was known like that, tidbits I've heard at the time and since, and other things I'd struggle to quantify!

It was nothing about 'imposing' signings on the manager, more that what has been spoken about by Ashton previously that it was effectively all hands to the pump with everyone using their contacts to try and get deals done that there was a relatively natural split in how it worked.

This isn't conspiracy, or an attempt to make anyone look bad, but merely my view on it and who was the driver for the transfers

It's just obvious unless you choose to ignore it on purpose.

You look at the style the manager plays, has played before and the types of players brought in that don't suit it at all

Fraser, for example never suited a PC lineup, he wasn't mobile enough.
Edwards and Harper, the west brom connection
Celina was Ashtons relationship with a member of the parent clubs staff..

It's not trolling to suggest a CEO brought in players for the managers squad. it happens at every club.

The problems are when you have a big miss, i.e. a player like Pigott, or an Evans, who for different reasons contributed very little whilst on no doubt bigger wages in the squad.

Overall transfers have been good though as the squad is in pretty good shape, it's just how much do the misses hamstring you? And when you go up through divisions it's inevitable that some players become passengers and too expensive to shift

I actually didn't think Penney was that bad and surprised he hasn't found a club, I thought he would have made an okay backup player here and oddly enough we could have probably done with that this season!

Lee Evans was a good player for us for two seasons, I suspect had he been fit he would have played a role this season much like the wrongly written off Edmundson and Hladky. He's a cool head on the pitch and that worked well with what Morsy offers.

I am not sure Burns was entirely Ashton, I remember him playing against Town and the consensus then was pretty much sign him up, Cook clearly saw what we all did.

Unpopular opinion but Bonne would have been a better squad player last season that the likes of Ahadme was, I suspect had QPR released him rather than demanded a fee he would have been back here for at least another season.

Not true Flash,

Ashton had contacts at Dijon, which I showed at the time.

Bare in mind, many of the staff who were here when mick was.. weren't anymore..
