I know it was only Maidstone (oh the irony) but Hutchinson started the game brilliantly yesterday. Would be nice to start with the pace and intensity of Sarmiento and Hutchinson and put Preston under pressure from the start. Let’s try to take the lead in a game for the first time since mid December.

Yeah, that’s the one if Gallagher comes off. I hope we’re going to sort out the right back issue this window too. Clarke wears his heart on his sleeve and has buckets of energy, but it would be nice to have options there.

Chaplin is desperately missing Hirst. When Omani came on against Leicester and played in the number 10 position he brought different attributes to that role. We were quicker and he was running at defenders from the number ten position. Its was great seeing a number ten running at central defenders rather than just the wingers running at left or right backs. Something Chappers doesn’t do. Chaplin is normally my first name in the team sheet but everyone needs a rest and there is no reason why we shouldn’t try to shake things up every so often, rather than be the team the opposition are expecting. Not starting a player in a McKenna team isn’t a reflection on them. He uses the squad well. We have starters and we have finishers. They aren’t second best substitutes sitting on the bench. McKenna has rested Chaplin before and he has made an intact from the bench. Accrington Stanley springs to mind last season when he came on for the final half hour and scored the two winning goals. Edit. So no. Not dropping Chaplin. Using him in a different phase of the match. [Post edited 28 Jan 2024 10:09]

Fair points. Personally, I think we need the goal threat Chappers offers and we're better off starting with him and then bringing Hutchinson on against tiring legs.

Oh well. Moving on. on 10:44 - Jan 28 with 1265 views | pointofblue | Hladky Clarke - Woolfenden - Edmundson - Davis Morsy - Luongo Burns - Chaplin - Sarmiento Jackson Subs: Walton, Tuanzebe, Humphreys, Travis, Taylor, Hutchinson, Harness, 2x strikers Pace changes games. If we get Johnson through the door early in the week, I might even be tempted to start him ahead of Sarmiento. The thought of both him.and Hutchinson coming on around the hour mark is so tempting, to stretch tiring defences. Add Jackson to that, if we manage to get a striker on early too. I appreciate those who say Sarmiento has earned a start though but, even still, I'd hold Hutchinson back for that reason.

This and if Gallagher hasn't signed them Broadhead. The Broadhead pile on is way over the top.

Jackson over Broadhead every time at the moment, as long as he's fit.

Winning penalties is perhaps an identifiable weakness in our play. Driving into the Penalty area would change that.

We still don't get them when we do do that and get fouled. See yesterday.

A good explanation. However, in our last 2 league games Hutchinson and Sarmiento have come on against tiring defenders to excellent effect, and I'd continue that. Chappers came on as a sub yesterday and didn't offer an awful lot. So stick with what's recently been working, IMO.

Not for me unless we specifically spot a weakness for pace at the back/we need to be more direct over through them. Broadhead was excellent when he came on against Leicester in terms of bringing others into the game. I think it has to depend on the opponent. Preston may be more of a low block which won't suit Jackson at all.
