Why does McKenna keep praising Morsy for Saturday?? on 14:02 - Aug 27 with 4205 views | dirtyboy | Probably praising him because he deserved it. I saw him in person on Saturday and can happily say he did very well considering who and what he was up against. Had a couple of 'nervy' moments, which was unlike him, but ultimately, won his individual battles and obviously never stopped running. He was one of, if not our best player overall, along with Szmodics. If an ounce of context is needed (shouldn't be) but he was in the middle of De Bruyne, Silve, Rico Lewis and Kovacic... ...bear that in mind for a second.

Morsy did fine and as our captain is likely to be involved a lot this season. You always know what you'll get from Morsy, even if he makes a mistake he'll make up for it. Hes the engine. Put an England midfielder next to him, 2 great central defenders behind him and a ruthless set of wingers and strikers up front and LET HIM COOK!

So basically Morsy is great as long as he has great players around him but the rest of the players who came up with us are crap?

More on FB and Twitter I think, although may have been something on here - I looked back through the pages of threads during the game and there were some toys being thrown out of the pram.

I’m fed up of laughing at peoples comments on FB about him, like I’ve said before, but goes without saying he’s the first name on the team sheet and will be a mainstay for the season, bar suspension

I posted this on Saturday, not sure if that's what you're on about. I wasn't stating he was particularly bad, in fact, he was one of our more solid performers. My comment was pointed more toward how restricted his play was, which is not surprising considering the opposition! He usually manages to swivel his way out of a corner or dink a short pass to take out a player but neither of those options were available to him against Citeh and his only way out more often than not was a hoof. This is the first time we've really seen Morsy hit his ceiling and that's no disservice to him at all!

Hadn’t really seen anything in particular about him tbh, was more of a general comment on that not, was just a quick scroll through.

yeah I thought he was quality too on Saturday. It is not just his play (and I think he held his own), but his leadership skills which are so important to us. We have waited years for a leader like him.

Yep, agreed re leadership. Did you notice how after the 3rd goal 9I think) he got the players together and gave a little pep talk. Class. Hos play was pretty good too - he really didn't look out of place. Certainly held his own against some of the best midfielders and attackers in the world. I was impressed. We've done well in these two games. OK - we can't hide the fact that we lost them both and were at time comprehensively outplayed at times, and we cannot have too many more games where we're plucky competitors. We really will need to get some points on the board. But there have been so many good things from so many of the players who I felt were really showing signs in the 2nd half at City of having learnt some painful lessons.

I’m sorry but we haven’t done well. We were - as you say - outplayed. Not all the time, but more than enough of the time to be beaten easily, twice. As a PL side, that is not doing well! Plucky moments isn’t enough. Doing well must surely mean picking up points?

ultimately yes, but this is a journey we are on. We were never going to slam Liverpool + Man City in our first 2 games, we might have hoped it might happen, but really you can see the difference in top of Premier League levels vs the Championship, there is a huge gap. Doing well, is competing through phases of the game, not getting completely trounced, having a game plan and seeing enough positive signs in the two performances to be optimistic we can compete. You also have to consider we really have only started to gel in some of our new signings, that will take some time before we have a lower mid Premier Squad fully indoctrinated into the McKenna style of play. I have never been more confident that we will return to play European football. You only have to look at our Manager, he is oozing Premier League class, confident, calm, clear on what we need to be competitive. Really, we just need to keep McKenna happy and back him and we will do very very well the next few seasons. I just hope McKenna realises that a few seasons with us will do him no harm at all. I would like to see him take this club to have by 7th/8th top attendance club in the Premier League, with a new stand, and European football, with some trophies to go with it. We just need to be fully behind this project and patient.

Doing well does mean picking up points, but not even Villa or Spurs fans pack their bags for the Etihad and expect to come home with much if anything. To suggest we should be doing that with a squad costing a 1/10th is a stretch. Let's see where we are in May. We've seen enough to show we can compete against the two best teams in the league, against lesser opposition, we can hope to come away with more.

His pass completion rate of 91% doesn’t square with hoofing more often than not.

Okay, apologies, I was over egging it slightly. My point is, before yesterday I struggle to think of any match I've watched Most play in and seen him hoof it at all let alone 3-4 times. There's no shame what so ever in admitting that perhaps Morsy was outplayed by a team full of world class players. He is 100% the reason we are where we are and has been the heartbeat of this team for over 2 years but he has a ceiling which will probably be proved to be mid table Prem teams. It not a criticism it's realism.

I’m hopeful too…! Just need to see a lot more before I can say we’re playing well. It’s just far too early to say. Your analysis, and hope with KM, feels spot on.

This aged badly. Those 2 against Wimbledon proved they are going to have to try to win their place off Morsy and thats not going to happen for a long time
