I'm not sure the Southport murderer also being charged with terror offences is a reasonable defence for attempting to set fire to a hotel full of innocent asylum seekers, terrorising British asian taxi drivers and trashing corner shops which my be owned by people whose skin colour offends knuckle dragging racists. |  |

Why is it sometimes on TWTD when someone asks a genuine question, they're met with such a harsh response from people like you and others calling them thick?
I saw his OP and didn't take it as a dim question. Just somebody who wants to know if anyone charged could actually have any grounds for appeal. Educating himself. The world is a much better place when you actually just educate people on the facts and the logic, not just instantly assume they're asserting a statement and call them a dinlo or similar for it.

As Badger stated, no one would've been put in prison for 'spreading misleading information' unless they were actively inciting violence, as far as reported anywhere (I can't find anything on the internet about anyone charged for purely spreading misinformation).
30+ people found themselves arrested for actions on social media, with 17 of those charged. The police will have deemed that some of those investigated did not meet the threshold for criminality. And in plenty of cases, the legal system could be the wrong way to deal with social media posts. (1)
I would imagine that 'those investigated did not meet the threshold for criminality' would hint that people posting misinformation couldn't be charged, as it is a bit of a grey area in the UK surrounding it. Further reading available online for that statement. (2)
