Shortest remembrance silence ever? 20:58 - Nov 3 with 3114 viewsRonFearonsHair

Must have been barely two seconds between the bugle finishing and a load of supporters starting to roar. Every other year I can remember everyone has stood respectfully in silence for up to a minute or so until the ref blew his whistle. Was this a deliberate anti-remembrance movement or were there just a lot of thick people in the crowd who couldn’t follow an incredibly basic protocol?

Don't know if it was just because I was near them but to me it sounded like the Leicester fans (after constant murmuring and shushing throughout the silence) were the ones who immediately started cheering when the bugle player finished which I guess set the rest of the stadium off. Every Town fan around me at least seemed bemused and a bit miffed that the full period of silence wasn't respected properly.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

That is how I remember it.

One Leicester fan really bellowed 'come on' and it set of their fans and in turn the rest of the ground very soon after the bugle had finished.

The ref did, in fairness blow his whistle to mark the end of the silence still during all of the cheering after about 4/5 seconds.

His performance went downhill from there!

I know that was then, but it could be again..

If you can't stay silent for a coupla minutes to give the minimum respect to fellow human beings who literally gave up their young lives so you can get p1ssed up at a poxy football match, you are an absolute scumbag of the highest order.

IMO.

I assumed it was your last point… the stupidity of thick people thinking the silence was whilst the bugle was playing, rather than that leading into the silence.

That was my thinking.

Did they get it all A about T? Should it be silence followed by the buglist?

Last season against Swansea we had the silence but didn't have the bugle playing The Last Post at all. Perhaps it needs to be as per the order at the Cenotaph, the silence followed by The Last Post as simple instructions can't be understood.

I understood there was to be a minutes silence after the last post but it was disrupted and the ref allowed things to proceed. Looks like another mistake he’s made.

The way I remember Rememberance Parade from my time in service is

Last Post, Standards slowly lowered

At the end of Last Post, 1 minutes silence ( sometimes 2 minutes )

At end of silence bugler plays Reveille, Standards sharply raised

So the silence commences at the end of Last Post

The full correct order is, Last Post, Silence, Reveille. I remember it got messed up at the New Den at a Town game a few years ago. But we were told on Saturday that it would be last post then silence ending on the referee's whistle. Seems a load of Leicester fans decided not to respect the silence.

From where I was back centre of SBR upper the loud roar clearly came from the Cobbold stand visitor section. Disgracefully disrespectful and their club should be ashamed and apologise for their disrupting our club's remembrance ceremony.

Was exactly the same at the Newcastle - Arsenal game.

People are idiots but the announcer should also have made it clear that the last post would be followed by a period of silence which would end at the ref’s whistle. Don’t expect people to understand as too many people don’t.

I think part of the problem was the spontaneous applause for Trevor Whymark. I think this confused the issue and it just went wrong after that.
Whilst the full silence wasn't observed I'm not sure there was any deliberate disrespect meant.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

No, it wasn’t very clear. I don’t think a short period of silence is too much to ask, but maybe it is these days. It saddens me. It is the least the people who sacrificed so much deserved.

People can always go to the war memorials on Remembrance Day if they want to show their respect. Not many will bother.

Members of the Merchant Navy were treated abominably at the time and after the war. It’s only in relatively recent years they’ve received recognition at all.

Pay was stopped the moment your ship sank. Unscrupulous owners sometimes sent out decrepit unsafe ships in the knowledge they might sink of their own accord, especially on Arctic convoys due to extreme weather, or fall apart under German attack so they could claim insurance. Conditions were usually dreadful and the work even without attack hard and dangerous. The crew? Who cares, get another.

The Arctic Star was not awarded until 2012. More than 30,000 merchant seamen lost their lives in WW2, 15,000 in WW1. Without these brave people, this country would have starved. The battle of the Atlantic was certainly the closest this country came to defeat by Germany.
