Bad day at the office, but it’s the first game for 2-3 months which we’ve just not been in from start to finish and that will happen.

Missed Delap big time, with no out ball we had to keep playing out and they could cheat and press the life out of us.

Absolute masterclass from Tonali and Bruno, as good as I’ve seen this season.

Too many players had an off day, from the first second of the game - Burgess, Morsy and Chaplin right through the spine didn’t have good games, lost nearly all their one v ones and can’t do that in the PL.

Tough couple of games coming up, need to get some players back fit and a couple of fresh additions - we only need to finish 1 spot higher than we currently are

When you look at Newcastle and break them down, you can see why they have had Champions League football

They have started the season slowly but are well capable of kicking on and giving far better sides than us a bloody nose

They're not the sort of side we are likely to be competing with at this stage

There's no shame in losing to them, we could have made things more difficult for them but I'm not sure it's in McKenna's DNA to try and play that way, which might be his undoing a little bit

He has to be adaptive at times

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Tonali is a beast and I expect he will play for a top club sooner or later. He was pretty much unplayable yesterday.

Spot on Joe , I don’t think Palace will over react after getting thumped by Arsenal yesterday , these results happen throughout the season to most clubs , not nice but try to learn from it .

I agree a bit more pragmatism to stop other sides playing is needed.Newcastle had so much space even in out box

First off - that's a different game if we have Hirst or Delap available. Newcastle knew we had no outlet at all, and could press high and hard without fear that we had an out ball. Even allowing for that initial caveat though, we got so much wrong, and a number of players were really poor.

Was surprised that we hooked Omari but left Chaplin on at half time, as Chaplin couldn't trap a bag of cement today, and nothing was working for him at all. Across the team we gave the ball away at will.

For the first goal I don't understand why Burgess didn't just head the long ball out, rather than allow it to drop and then get caught behind. Balls in behind gave Burgess big problems all game, and his lack of pace was horribly exposed. Even then it felt like we had a couple of chances to clear and failed to do so.

Second goal I need to see again, but felt like it was straight down the middle and you want Muric to be stopping it.

Third goal was an absolute horror show, and I can't explain how Muric thought that was a sensible pass to play, even if the pass was asked for. Though my point above about no outlet stands here, as Newcastle had flooded our box knowing that in the unlikely event we went long they would instantly win it back.

Fourth goal we were statuesque in our defending.

To be honest 4-0 probably flattered us based on the chances created, and we created nothing of note all game. It was men against boys.

Burns is a real problem for us if he isn't going to back himself against full backs. Morsy was uncharacteristically careless with the ball. Szmodics is very evidently not able to play as a 9 at this level. In fact pretty much every player was well below the standard you'd hope for, with 2 players probably given a pass.

Broadhead showed a level of composure and technique that was lacking elsewhere. Al Hamadi is clearly not at the level we need this season, but he at least gave us a presence up front and asked a few questions of their defence with some decent runs.

Us being rubbish today doesn't mean we are rubbish overall, much like poor individual performances don't make players rubbish, but man we need some of our absent players back soon. Really need to add an extra sprinkling of quality in January too, to give ourselves a fighting chance of escaping the drop.

A very bad day at the office and there’s a nagging feeling that yesterday marked the beginning of the end, such was the awfulness of our display. BUT, a lot of football to be played and players to return from injury. We’re not dead yet

I'd argue Palace was very similar regarding not being on it from start to finish and that was only three weeks a go, give or take. They just didn't have the number of attacking players to take advantage of it.

We obviously have to keep the faith, and hopefully we will strengthen in January, but the thing that worries me is that very few of our remaining fixtures are anything but fairly or very difficult, given the level that the vast majority of Premier League teams appear to be at.

Indeed, of our next 6 fixtures, the "easiest" appears to be Brighton at home. Sadly, it doesn't necessarily get much easier after that.

The real shame for my part is that we really ought to have got a further five or six points in recent weeks which would have made our task from now on that bit easier, assuming that, say, 34 points is needed to avoid relegation.

Correct.. but please can there at least be acknowledgement that we do need to say thank you but goodbye to 60/70% of our squad to move forwards.

( for clarity.. From those who got us promoted. )

When you think of stable prem clubs. You must see that we need to effectively replace the majority of the past 2 season journey players.. that's close to 90% of the squad no?

Other way of looking at it.
If you were a prem side. Which of our league 1 promoted squad would you be looking to sign from us? Besides Davis of course.

I know you like to make out I'm making hot takes. But serious conversation here.

90% is a crazy take on the squad, but you don't say over how many seasons. Sure, we need to strengthen EVERY position, and that inevitable means many players will move on, but to suggest 24-25 players need to be waved goodbye to is (hopefully) hyperbole.

But we're not aiming for stable premier league club this season. The aim is literally to finish 17th. And we're not that far off it

Our league 1 players don't make up anywhere near 90% of the squad.
Just an attention seeking headline imo.
Squad of say 25. So 2-3 players only being kept?

You misinterpret me. I am stating how few players would be retained if your hot take off 90% of the squad has to go. 3 is a generous calculation, 2 is being a bit harsh. Hence 2-3

Obviously all about opinions but if we stay up. I can't see us going into 25/26 with any of the promotion side bar Davis and Hutch in the match day 18.
