In previous eras there was a much higher percentage of players with the characteristics that suit them to this role. I understand that tactics and football has changed, but that has not changed the physical attributes of the pool of players. So where are they all?

So what has happened to all of those 9s? on 16:05 - Jan 23 with 1792 views
Few years back you couldn't buy a left back, now there are loads. I would imagine it will sort its self out in a few years.
Look at the England U21s. Overloaded with big strong AMs with quick feet. Some of those like Chukwuemeka, Madueke and Elliott would have bene out and out strikers a few years back.

Seems like a lucrative gap in the market to me. I'm sure this will sort itself out in a few years.
You have to think that there are a lot of physical similarities between some defenders and a number nine - but as a young'un, you are going to look at your chances of getting into a side, and being a strong quick defender gives you a lot more opportunity than a single 9 in the ITFC system.
So, on the basis that we want someone with attributes of Delap or Hirst - that is 185 - 191cm height, 75-85 kg, nice turn of pace, I give you the following: - Axel Tuenzebe - Dara O'Shea - Harry Clarke - Jens Cajuste (OK, not a defender, but might "do a job")

My guess, without any data whatsoever to back it up, is that your traditional English number 9 (big lump, good in the air) tends to be more at home in leagues one and two. The top level now demands a level of technical ability that those players don't have.
I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun.
I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Harry Clarke was a striker at youth level.
Still think he is the next Richard Naylor. No one believes me though.

I wonder if some of it is the 'Messi' effect, where there is a generation of young players that wanted to be attacking midfielders. Plus then add in the Guardiola effect and the amount of emphasis on technical development in this country which has probably had an impact.
I wouldn't imagine it will take long for the Haaland influence to rub off on the next crop of players.
There has always been a shortage of available 9s in the January window. If you want to buy a 9 with ability you need to buy them in the pre-season window. I guess we were unfortunate / fortunate during that window. We went all out for Ioannidis, but unfortunately he decided to stay, Fortunately we did buy Delap, We then spent ages on Broja and fortunately that deal failed. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but maybe spending ages on Broja could have been better spent on other options.

Is it as simple as the game is more technical and more is expected of each player (tracking back, closing down, etc.)? Big lumps with not a lot of athleticism and the touch of an anvil, but who can get their head on anything and beat up the CBs probably don’t tick enough boxes now.

You see a heck of a lot of this at Academy level too.
Lost track of the number of slick, fast AM's Ive seen, but scarcely any big, strong, horrible natural-looking finishers.
Weirdly, few ball-playing keepers too. Mostly just big f'ckers!
