Anyone used revolut for travelling?

Seems to be very popular and the rates are ment to be better.

Do you basically get a account, that you transfer money into, to use it?
Or does it link to an existing bank account? Can't seem to find a straight answer on their website.

I transfer money into mine with Apple Pay from a debit card linked to my main bank account.

Truly impaired.

Yes I use it loads. You can open up multiple accounts in different currencies, and you just add cash to them. When you run low you just make a bank transfer from your bank in seconds. I bought a physical card for a fiver as some countries don’t always have pay by phone capabilities.

I've used Revolut for nearly 8 years, even as my main bank for a couple( not advisable, terrible customer services and fraud prevention)
But solely as a travel card it's perfect, you can even withdraw foreign currency from airport atms like travelex and they give you the spot price not Travelex rate for free!
I've already starting saving Into my Vietnamese account for my holiday next year

Halifax blue credit card is the best solution.

Revolut and starling are fine but they are actually debit cards so you need to proactively send sufficient funds in advance. I generally cba with this.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I find the Chase Bank card is better for travelling- although it is a debit card.

Also I don't trust Revolut's security, 50% of the stories you hear about people's accounts being hacked involve Revolut

I use it for holidays / weekend getaways as I just find it really handy for keeping a track of spending. I like to set budgets before I go away so I just transfer a set amount into my account. It’s really easy to move money from one place to another and the virtual card is available instantly and it’s all free. Very much recommend it if you like to budget for things like that.

I use Starling which I find great for nearly everything. However, and this probably applies to Revolution too, when you check in at a hotel and they ask to put a deposit on your card to cover the bill when you leave for food or drink expenditure, room charges etc, they won’t accept a debit card and you’ll have to use a credit card. But it’ll only be a hold and they don’t physically charge your card, and you can actually pay any bill when you leave using Starling or a debit card anyway.

I opened a nationwide account in 2004 for free money withdrawals abroad. If you have a debit account and a savings or mortgage account with them. Your classes as a share holder.
Mrs Suffolkpoker, suffolkpoker Jnr and I have had £300 each for free part of there fairer share.

I also have Monzo, for moving money in for beers / burning / or anything else I would t usually trust my real bank card for.

Revolt sounds handy for exchange rates etc but i don’t believe it beats free money with nationwide

Used it for 5/6 yards now. Reliable, and the app works great.

echoing others on here… i’ve used it for several years. It is essentially a pre-paid debit card that has an iban/account number & sort code, so you can do instant transfers from your main bank, then add desired currencies, and move the money between them as needed.
Can add it to Google wallet.
Also, the app has single-use debit card numbers if you want to make an online purchase or subscription without having to use the main card number or worry about cancelling future (post-trial) payments in time.
There’s (i think still) also a way to access your account via desktop if you lose your phone.

Look up Wise for a good travel card - although prepay they have sensible interest rates so it can act as a sort of deposit account too.

Starling are decent, second the Nationwide suggestion too - but only certain accounts include decent travel rates.

I’ve got a Chase current account I just use for travel. It was considered pretty much the best option a few years ago for fee-free overseas spending and withdrawals, so can second this option.

Good comparison of card options for travel. Revolut has preliminary approval to operate as a full service bank in UK but is not yet offering current accounts.

I use Monzo abroad. Is there any benefit of using Revolut over Monzo?

Just as a point of pedantry it's no longer a pre-paid debit card as they now have a full banking license in the UK. Whilst this makes little difference in the day-to-day use of the card (in that there is no overdraft, so you need to add money to the account if you don't have your wages paid in) it does mean that you get the usual protections from faud and buyer's rights which you wouldn't have had in the past with the pre-paid card :)

I use Revolut as my main spending account and have my wages deposited into it as they pay it in a day early...well in a 5pm the day before rather than 2am on pay day. This can be very useful if you are due to be paid on a Monday as it arrives at 5pm on the Friday.

Have Revolut, good for travel but not much different to Monzo etc really.

For me it is great as I work a German company, and our share scheme pays out in euros. Can avoid hefty currency fees by paying it in to my Revolut account in euros, even paying for the Premium account works out cheaper than the broker fees, and comes with some other nice perks (Tinder Plus would raise a few questions with the wife if utilised though)

I have the Premium Plan too. I already subbed to Headspace, and Nord VPN so it saved me a few quid a month!
