Live Aid concert on BBC2 19:55 - Jul 12 with 1715 views | Bent_double | If there's any other saddos like me sat indoors on a lovely sunny, summers evening, you could do worse than watch the incredible Wembly concert from 40 years ago on TV

It wasn't like the concerts you get nowadays of course, which are just a complete assult on the senses, but (assuming you weren't around at the time) you just can't imagine what it was like to see all this incredible British acts in the same place. It was unreal. But yes, Queen rocked the place!

I was 12 and looking forward to Adam Ant as he was my first musical influence, so I was so disappointed when he did Vive la rock… And when Geldof, Townsend and Moyet came out to sing backing vocals for Let It Be, there was initially a long shot and I genuinely thought Geldof had managed to get Ringo Starr and George Harrison out there!

I was 9 and remember watching it, first time I saw U2, Queen the Who etc live on tv which probably helped me fall in love with music. But just watching it now it all seems slow/low key for example Phil Collins in the air tonight where was the drums etc? That makes the song! The crowd reactions or lack of clearly sums up the mood!

The only time I tolerate Queen is when I have my VR headset on and play Beatsaber as for some reason they are the best smashing boxes tracks
Live Aid concert on BBC2 on 21:07 - Jul 12 with 1433 views | wischip | Watching this reminds me of watching Christmas TV with my parents & grandparents years ago with everyone calling out "He's dead......she's dead......is he dead?" (especially for Dad's Army and Carry On). Now 40 years on I'm saying it watching Live Aid again. Fascinating the contrast between this concert and watching Glastonbury coverage only a week ago. And I miss the old Wembley.

I think the Wembley crowd was more into it than the Philadelphia crowd. Not sure about ITAT, maybe just badly edited? Anyway, Freddies on...

I agree with this - bits like this Sting and Phil Collins bit just fall a bit flat on massive Wembley stage. Amazing performances, don't get me wrong, but it's really low key.

Random Nik Kershaw Information... I see he's currently on the small provincial gig circuit in the UK. On the other hand, I'm off to see a German band called PUR in Gelsenkirchen in September, and he's joining them on stage in front of 80,000 people to sing some of his songs with them, and join them in German for a few of theirs. Completely random!

Since my previous post,it seems U2 and Dire Straits upped the energy levels I will still never forgive my mum for not letting me see Queens next and subsequent last tour! So good live

I saw the end of U2 and then Dire Straits. Sultans of Swing was brilliant. Now watching Queen. Freddie Mercury — something else. [Post edited 12 Jul 22:37]

Absolute master showman. Regardless of the music, there'll never be another quite like him.

I saw the Queen concert at Hammersmith in December 1979. It was one of the most extraordinary things I’ve seen. Brilliant doesn’t cover it. Better than that. But it felt, if I’m honest, more of a stage performance/show than a down and dirty gig as I knew it. That’s not a criticism, just how I saw it at the time. Mercury - what a showman, what a voice and oh how they hell did he get those trousers on? Fantastic at Live Aid. Killed it. I’ve been watching it tonight. I’m glad they showed The Who doing Won’t Get Fooled Again. One of my favourite ever tracks and they smashed it. Thought the Philadelphia stuff looked subdued. Bit like most of the audience weren’t quite sure why they were there. The day itself, everybody knows where they were. I actually had to work that day. We had the radio on the whole day and still enjoyed it. I’ve never really watched it back bar bits, so watching some of it tonight was great. What a voice George Michael had. Sad the way it ended as it did.

Collins in the air tonight when he got to Philly was something else. I was at Wembley arena that day for the dire straits concert in the evening, so we ended up listening to them and queen in the car park, which was still amazing. When I got home I watched the last couple of hours of the US coverage. Always quite liked the line up they had there over Wembley but just down to taste (and zeppelin).

NK is a former Northgate pupil, who still lives locally on the border with Essex. My boss knows him, apparently he is quite introverted but his wife is the life and soul of any party.

Yeah, it was a bit of a mess but refreshing to see when gigs go wrong.

I think the Philly crowd were struggling with the heat, it was 35C, but you are in a concrete stadium with 89000 people with no shade for hours in the middle of the day, oh and bottle water wasnt a big thing back then, they could just drink alcohol or pepsi (if you spotted the subtle branding). Its why Jack Nicholson referred to the fire hose, as thats literally all the could do is spray people with water so they didnt all pass out.
