Logically, why would Akpom want to join either of us permanently at this stage? Surely it makes more sense to go on loan and have some flexibility next year should either us or Birmingham (whoever he joins) not go up? Rather than being 31 and possibly stuck at a Championship club calling the shots?

In all honesty, if Akpon decides to go to Brum it doesn't bother me. In my opinion he's not a game changer, just a capable body through the door.

reading a report Ajax let him choose which club to join and he obviously turned Brum down, hence cancelling his medical. I think it will be fine - he seems to want to join us. Brum just not happy they have lost out. Like you, I also don't think the Hackney is done and dusted.
Brum aren't going to be promotion material this season - we are more likely contenders imho | | | |

The key difference in a permanent deal is that the player has to agree personal terms. He has already shown his desire to come here when he chose us over Brum when two loan deals were in the table. Not sure he would want to go there now or feel comfortable about it either having turned them down once. |  |

Would like to think this is in the player's court now. He's allegedly on €5m p/y and Ajax don't see value or affordability in that, hence wanting him off the books last winter and this summer. To sanction his move and medical here only to renege on that, well Akpom could theoretically refuse Brum's permanent offer and then Ajax would face carrying heavy wages which they clearly don't want to lift.
He must be high enough on our list that we felt compelled to act today, and I see why personally given his serious credentials in this division. We've rightly been swooning over a new midfielder this pre-season who was plying his trade at a much lesser French club than the one Akpom was playing for in May. | | | |

It might be, 7M is nothing if you go up but noticeable dent into a second season parachute payment, also would be curious what he wants on wages. We need the bodies, overall I am fairly lukewarm warm on this one to be honest but I’d be happy to get him in the squad for decent depth and experience at the moment. Obviously had a great season a few years ago for Boro. I’d still want a like for like Hirst replacement though as well, I’m hoping the Azon deal happens as well to try and develop him. |  | | |
