Palmer’s first touch 20:00 - Aug 17 with 2548 viewsPinewoodblue

When we passed the ball back to him his first touch, more often than not, was dreadful.
He kept having to step back to make his second touch.

The number of times he went to kick long then changed his mind and made an unconvincing short pass was worrying.

His kicking - short and long - is even more woeful than my WBA-supporting mate warned me in Jan.

I think in an absolutely ideal world we'd be looking for a replacement who can use his feet better. But being pragmatic as I'm sure they are at the top, he's competent enough and we probably need a steady transition rather than prioritising a replacement and adding to the churn and gelling.

Playing out from the back worked 2 years ago as we had partnerships all over the pitch, a keeper who was very good with the ball at his feet and Morsy who could receive the ball on the edge of his own area, turn under pressure and create space. We currently have none of these key components and we look vulnerable. The clearance from Palmer that hit their forward could have gone anywhere and on another day would cost us the game.

I hate the ‘we’ll be fine with Palmer till next summer’ argument.

No, we won’t.

Honestly, Walton, Muric and Palmer have all underperformed compared to Vas. We should have kept him, unless we could bring in a world-beater, which we most certainly did not.

Feels a bit like he left under a cloud though, so it seems unlikely.

If I'm being *brutally* honest, I'd have sold all three of our keepers this summer and started from scratch.

5 keepers on the books - well 4 technically as 1 won’t ever play - none of which are any good, and the half decent one we did have we’ve sent out on loan (albeit understandable given the difficult season he’s had and seemingly no way back for him).

Said it all along, a keeper is just as important as another centre mid/striker/winger.

Agreed and I’d add Woolfy to that, those 3 were instrumental to how we played out from the back.

He’s meant to be a decent keeper, but I’ve been surprised that he doesn’t appear much of a step up from Walton. Arguably a step down from Hladky in terms of how we want to play. He’s still ok though.

He isn't a step up from Walton. I did say that when we signed him in Jan. We'd have been better off sticking with Walton last season and spending time properly finding a long-term Hladky replacement rather than giving a sticking plaster a 3-4 year Prem contract.

Bizarrely though, Forest did make a move for Palmer this summer, but we turned it down (!)

Woolfy good shout but KMc is unlikely to make that sort of change.

There are an increasing number of teams playing three at the back.

Definitely. I miss Woolfy being a regular first team starter. The whole team knew their role in the promotion winning sides and so the risks were outweighed by the reward. There was also an element of surprise - newly promoted team daring to try and outplay established Championship clubs. That’s not the case now. We need to adapt and vary our style.

He had an absolute mare with his feet today, especially in the second half. I thought criticism of his kicking had been harsh previously, but it was certainly exposed today.

When he came well out of the area I was thinking, well done you’ve got there 1st now launch it. Considering he’s so poor with his feet he inexplicably tried to control it.

I missed all that but in hindsight I’d have agreed with you. Having a keeper better with his feet would be a big plus. Or, just don’t expect him to faff around with it - that’s a perfectly reasonable option! We don’t have to try and play through the press. Nothing wrong with going longer and focusing on winning second balls. More teams are starting to do that with some success.

He lacks the footballing brain of Hladky. Vas was two moves ahead of the opposition players. He saw everything in front of him which is why his long kicking was also as good as his short.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

We made a massive mistake a year ago. I posted at the time, and nothing has changed my mind since, we only kept Walton because he had a year left on his contract whereas Vac's contract had expired. So we would have needed to sell Walton or settle his contract, and instead opted to give Walton a 12 month extension and let Vac leave. This was one of the biggest errors that KMac and GC20 have made. Vac was absolutely fundamental to our success in gaining promotion. Now I'm not saying Vac is a 1st choice Prem goalie, but what we needed last year was a 1st choice keeper who could play with his feet in the same way as Vac, but also have better aerial command. Not easy, but we had big bucks to spend and we should have made this a top priority.
As of now, we need a new 1st choice keeper, who can play football. We're not in the Prem, and at this level, we know Vac is "good enough" with his goalkeeping, but his footwork sets him apart and provides the confidence that allows the entire team to play far more expansively. Get him back if we can't find anyone better, cos he is sure better than anyone we have in the building now.

The two teams we have played this season have done a very good high press. We really stitched Palmer up at times today with our backwards passing.

We need a player who we can ping the ball into and they can then control the ball and then beat a man. Nobody is really willing to do that. So we take the easy route out and go backwards.
