Chaplin > Szmodics on 19:31 - Aug 17 with 2576 views | Swailsey | Really? Szmod was a lot of people’s MOTM today - everything good came through him. I love Chappers, but he rushed things against Brum and today. Sammy every week for me - looked like a different player in that number ten role.

Szmodics touched the ball 24 times all game. Chaplin had 18 touches in 25 mins. We do look more fluid as a creative force with Chaplin than Szmodics, IMO of course. I admire Szmodics' pressing and energy but we need more guile to get the best out of Philogene, Clarke and Hirst.

I think Chappers brings other players into the game more definitely, but this was the first game in months that I felt we were playing with a proper number 10. Smod’s link-up with Hirst was great.

I don't recall them linking up much whatsoever? The game always seems to pass Szmodics by in our system. I'm not really sure he's a good fit for us full stop, but he's here and I'll back him if he starts over Chappers.

Hirst played him through for the chance where he hit the post, and I’m pretty sure there were a few other chances too. Game of opinions eh!

Chaplin > Szmodics on 19:49 - Aug 17 with 2276 views | Swansea_Blue | I thought the introduction of Chappers gave us a boost and made us look more incisive, but I missed Sammie’s highlights, so you can ignore me.

Chaplin > Szmodics on 20:03 - Aug 17 with 2152 views | bsw72 | Odd post, completely different players and styles. Chaplin brings others into the game, while Szmodics looks to break and create chances. Chaplin came on when players like Clarke and Philogene went off so became the creative hub, with the wide men then looking to get in behind the fullbacks, prior to that Philogene and Clarke tried to move inside and create space for Hirst and Szmodics to run into.

Definitely agree, very different players. I do think we are crying out for a little bit of creativity at the minute that we just aren't getting from Szmodics or the midfield two as they bed in. Chappers just has an eye for a pass. He has that ability to play that pass round the corner into space and get someone in behind that you don't get with Sammie. Take that pass to Ogbene towards the end of the game, yes the game was more open but we had been crying out for that. I'd personally play both next weekend. Szmodics on the left for his pressing away from home, Chappers in the middle to knit it together and Philogene on the right for that ability to unlock a defence.
Chaplin > Szmodics on 20:56 - Aug 17 with 1823 views | itfcsuth | Both should play, both outstanding at this level. Szmodics inside left, Chaplin centre.
Chaplin > Szmodics on 00:16 - Aug 18 with 1453 views | Hugoagogo_Reborn | I thought Szmods was unlucky today. Plenty of endeavour, desire, and creativity, but that shot off the post summed up his day. I can see him hitting some excellent form if he just keeps doing what he is doing. But having both him and Chappers fighting for the no. 10 will only be good for us, at the end of the day.

I agree with your conclusion. It's not Chaplin v Szmodics, it should be Chaplin v Clarke.

Chaplin > Szmodics on 06:44 - Aug 18 with 1125 views | NickITFC | Both have their strengths and both had decent games! I would be keen to see Szmodics start on the left and Chaplin in the 10 role. Only drawback to that is not having fresh legs to bring on in the 10 role.

Two very different players. Chappers dropped into our own half to get the ball and be a play maker Sammy is a support striker who's job was to press be high and be available. Hence my post yesterday about needing a ball playing cm who can bring Sammy more into the game as that support striker.

Sammie pressed well, obviously for the goal etc Chaplin might be the hardest working player I’ve seen, and some of his passing when he drops in is better than Sammie. Both finish v well. Bit of a mute point because if McKenna brings in Chappers it’ll be a wide player making way, and Sammie out left I would think, getting them both in, at the minute when we are struggling for any control seems a good idea. It’s ok saying Sammie was a pressing machine, but as a team, we pressed really well for the first 10 minutes, maybe 15 and that was it. After that we didn’t. They got control and we lacked intensity. The same as most games…, not sure what’s going on…, we don’t keep the ball very well, and without it, we struggle to press like we did 23/24 . I honestly can’t remember the last time we controlled a game with the ball…, that’s the biggest issue I see, we’re giving it away so much, we’re having to do too much work without it. Anyway…, probably do need to find a shirt to give Chaplin a few games.., if he has the hunger still, he’s a leader and a grafter, and we need both right now. Thought Clarke and Philogene not inverting…, playing in their natural side with width…, don’t think I’ve ever seen McKenna do that from the start, and thought we looked much better, Hirst is a threat on crosses more than most, so I like that a lot…, we’ve never really hit crosses in as a team from the wings unless it’s a full back overlapping. Clarke has the best stats in this division 1 on 1 for Sunderland …, that was getting chalk ok his boots…., we seemed desperate to coach his strengths away …, now the penny might have finally dropped.
Chaplin > Szmodics on 08:53 - Aug 18 with 712 views | BrentwoodBlagger2 | I thought Szmodics was one of our best players yesterday. When Chaplin came on I feel that he was affected by the stick he was getting from their fans and players. He was clattered right in front of their fans and the he then proceeded to attempt to blast the ball against their player but missed him and only succeeded in sending it straight to their keeper.
Chaplin > Szmodics on 09:50 - Aug 18 with 552 views | Smoresy | I thought Chaplin brought much needed impetus and urgency in the middle and was key to unlocking our attacking potential on the right side. I'm surprised Szmodics was so many people's MOTM yesterday. I wasn't surprised to see afterwards that he had a pass accuracy of 43%, that he didn't record a key pass or creative data point, or that he lost his three duels. While we were struggling to consistently build attacks from the back, I thought we missed someone more suited to the CAM role on the pitch. I saw the good stuff too though, his tenacity, runs in behind. The other key part of our attacking threat, winning the ball high and quickly breaking on the opponent, he's well suited to. Was pleased to see him stay on for the full 90' as he's got the engine and goal threat to justify it.

Touches doesn’t mean a great deal though. It’s what you do with the ball that counts. SS carries a bigger goal threat. On another day he bags a couple of goals. This is not a pop at Chappers, because he’s great, but as others have said brings different strengths to the table.

If Chaplin played with Clarke, I think that 2nd half appearence looks abit different He had the benefit of having ogbene playing the burns role, getting high and wide, running behind the defenders. Clarke however pretty much wanted ball to feet and any balls that went through for him, he didn't run for..

Could be spot on there. On the most disappointing one -when Johnson played the pass between defenders while Clarke was walking backwards - Clarke had shaped up for that through ball twice before giving up on it being made, and then it was. There were a few occasions across the two halves when Clarke was visibly expressing that he was on a different wavelength.
