12 Million...... 12:32 - Sep 1 with 2026 viewspetieboy2011

The way people keep harping on about Ipswich spending £12 million on McAteer is though it came out of their pockets rather than the clubs!

How about get over it, he's our player now and maybe get behind him and the team perhaps?

I imagine Coventry City has a similarly positive view of our sales!

I obviously want him to prove me wrong but I don't get the logic behind the signing. We'd have been better off keeping Ogbene and spending the money on a CB/CM.

Yeah, thought he was sharp, composed and reliable on the ball and whilst not having a massive attacking impact, he seemed to integrate really well with Young, O'Shea, Matusiwa and Cajuste. Suspect he's got the nous to get into our way of playing pretty quick. He's also taller than I thought.

He's not helped himself after completely fluffing a great chance last week, then having the touch of a hippo just before halftime on Saturday to end a really promising attack though.

Are we really still passing judgement on new players after just a single game?

Colour me shocked.

If Al-Hamadi is worth £3m then you could make an argument McAteer is worth 8 figures. I thought when he signed he's a good player, young, solid, hard working and fits the profile McKenna will want, but £5m too expensive and I stand by that. But when you're signing in this market and with deep pockets from a promotion rival you're likely to pay over the odds.

I'm still concerned at the lack of contribution from Nunez and Egeli so far, what a waste of money.

What I love the most about TWTD - you make a really valid point and then get jumped on by the usual "can't we debate it" - "can't we have an opinion" brigade.

Its exactly the same when someone states that they've just read something and the usual's coming out and basically tell them that they haven't.

Seriously its so tedious and so predictable

No problem with having a debate or discussion etc, but the fact we paid £12 million for him seems to get brought up in every thread at some point. Some people need to let it go and accept it.

That was the point I was making thats all.

It’s £200 million we’ve spent.

If we aren’t promoted this season or next, do you know what it means for the clubs future - for decades to come?!?

Maybe those concerned understand the consequences of wasting money, and not getting value.

£200 million spent V’s £10 million legacy squad, which is more effective?

You don’t get to spend.., spend.., and spend again when you keep getting it wrong!!!

We spent TWENTY TWO years outside the top flight doing exactly that before.

There ARE consequences. Learn about football finance. It’s as important as anything happening on the pitch.

It defines our future.

So no. £10 million on Ogbenne, Mcateer Greaves, Clarke etc etc etc ISNT OK.

Where has the OP declared you can't debate it or have an opinion?

Are you saying no one can have an opinion about someone elses opinion?

We've also sold Broadhead, Hutchinson and Delap for a combined £80m or best part thereof.

What's the net spend since Gamechanger, and the net movement in the asset value. That's ultimately the test of whether we've got value.

100%

We aren't firing as a squad atm, but look at the book value of our squad now compared to when we got promoted from L1

It's night and day. We are current way less as a team than the sum of our parts, whereas in our back to back promotions it was the opposite. It's up to the manager to change that and it takes time.

I think the thing is that certain posters come up with aggressive and definitive dismissals of players after seeing them play twice! Have maybe forty touches. In a new team.

Unless you're watching training sessions AND can see two months or more into the future AND are a better judge of players than KMc, then the only way you can come up with these opinions is to cast aside objectivity and go with the edgy "look at my knowing cynicism and note it for for the future" take.

I think the regularity with which it is brought up is an indicator of a consensus that his fee appears to be the worst value this year. I would agree with that, on paper, especially given that we've then gone on to buy another expensive right winger in Egeli, and we already have spent fortunes on Clarke and Philogene.

However, we must support him just the same regardless of how much he cost. He may yet turn out to be good value. It may depend on how he's used. I can't see him being a first XI regular if Egeli is anything like his billing. But we'll see.

Certainly I think once the window closes, the numbers that people will be most interested in will be the numbers in the league table. Fees attached to players will be in our thoughts less (unless it all goes horribly wrong, but I'm choosing to be optimistic today).

There has been something of an inflationary step this summer - which we are at the forefront of, as a parachute money club, having made some big sales and needing to renew the squad.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Agreed. From a financial side its like a portfolio of any assets, like shares for example. You won't win them all, some will be up and some down, for every £1 we lose on a Muric or Ogbene we hop to make £1.25 on others. Ultimately if you're in a favourable net position that's what it comes down to.

From a football side you improve the players at your disposal. We've gone from a bench of Jackson, Harness, Ball, Ladapo to at times what will no doubt be J. Clarke, Nunez, Szmodics, Azon. Or Philogene, a £17m Egeli. Chaplin's gone from key man to bit part. There's zero doubt in my mind we've got a hell of a squad for this level, now its up to McKenna and co. Previously the whole was greater than the sum of the parts, now we need the whole to just get somewhere close to the sum of the parts.
