Probably because it cost the equivalent of a cup of tea to get in. I think I remember that view, but could be my mind playing tricks. If it was before mid-70s then I don’t.

Cos the gates were closed so you wouldn't get that view on match day

It’s on the Ipswich Society FB page and says A view into Ipswich Town Football Stadium - 1977 David Steward took a short series of monochrome photographs. He says, as a teenager, probably some time between about 1976 and 1979, he walked around Ipswich with his SLR camera. It certainly rings bells. Presumably it’s from behind the North Stand. I’m sure you could see through to the ground. We used to sometimes go down and watch the training on the pitch at the side.

Remember it well. It was probably the first year I had a season ticket in 1977. TWTD.

Back in the early 70s we used to play in the Boys Brigade League on Saturday afternoons. Our captain used to drop us off so we could run in and see the last 20 or so minutes of the game. Ahhh....memories.

Swear my mum said you’d get in free after half time at one point. It looks familiar to me, went first in 78 and was only 4, so unlikely.

I may be wrong but I think they only opened up the Churchmans gates for people to come in. Unfortunately, sometimes opportunist away fans would do the same. Darlington on a Tuesday night league cup game was a surprising example of this. I can remember walking through flying fists.

Pioneer was build in 1984 wasn't it. I reckon you mean the East Stand (alongside Portman road). I remember as a young teenager being in awe that we had something so big and modern!

Yes, this was definitely a thing in early 80's I think they opened the gates so fans could leave when they needed / wanted, but you could also get in to see the second half for free. Seems unthinkable now

Who can remember this pitch view on 18:56 - Sep 4 with 1253 views | north_stand77 | Fairly certain that was the North Stand. Loads of local kids would pile in after the gates opened, to stand and watch the last moments of a game!
Who can remember this pitch view on 20:01 - Sep 4 with 1129 views | DistantBlue | 1977 was the year of my first Portman Road visit....Colin Viljoen's testimonial, and a 2-1 win over those from up the road. Viljoen himself scoring the first after two minutes. I seem to remember the ground looking rather fuller than this from my East stand viewpoint.

Pioneer was early 80s, as that’s what got the blame for us selling the side after Robson left

That’s correct many times I’d walk to the ground and just after half time they would open the gates and I would try and squeeze in. From memory most times I struggled to see much but it was definitely a thing. TWTD

I was 14/15 mid 70's It used to cost 50p to get in Churchman's but North Stand had a no kids policy, so I had to pay adult prices to get ih which was 1 pound. For reference my parents had Cafe's on clacton sea front and we used to charge 8p for a cup of tea and 10p for a coffee :)
Who can remember this pitch view on 01:23 - Sep 5 with 712 views | Double_Dutch | I can certainly recall gaining entry with my mates, when the Churchmans gates opened following half-time for Town 2 - Derby 6, April 1976. A result you don't forget and, if memory serves me correctly, some real needle between Franny Lee and Mills.
