I’m not against there being more teams. After all, it’s a “World Cup” so the more of the world that can be involved, the better. But I do think that even the current format means too many games for the teams going deep into the competition, and this would be even worse.
With this in mind, I think there should be a preliminary round, with the top sides somehow entering at a later stage. Similar to the FA Cup I suppose.
Not quite sure how it would work, but it’s something that would have to be considered. |  |

The format would actually be simpler than the current setup - 16 groups, top two through from each.
However, hosting the thing would be ridiculous. Every tournament would have to be a similar logistical mess as this one with people flying all over the place, as no single country would be able to host the number of games required.
This world cup has been fine but 32 teams worked well. If you are good enough, you'll qualify, small world cups don't exclude smaller teams. | | | |
