| 2030 World Cup 21:00 - Jul 12 with 1245 views | Zx1988 | I see that Infantino is already making noises about expanding it to 64 teams and, given that there are already six host nations lined up, I can see that he might get some mileage from it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo I asked ChatGPT to work out what such a tournament would look like, and it threw this together: Also, ChatGPT is bloody savage. Its comments on Group O, for instance: "Japan might be seeded, but all four teams would realistically believe they could qualify. Scotland would inevitably begin with a stirring draw, lose the second match in inexplicable circumstances and enter the final game requiring a seven-goal swing." | |

There'd be some utter dross in there (notwithstanding that the ties between some of the lesser teams would potentially be quite exciting). FIFA is the only organisation that can look at a perfect 32-team tournament and decide "what this needs is Panama v New Caledonia at 3am on a Tuesday".

I could see something like group winners go through to last 32. Second and third have an additional play off round to decide who the group winners play.

| 2030 World Cup on 07:02 - Jul 13 with 625 views | ThatMuhrenCross | I’m not against there being more teams. After all, it’s a “World Cup” so the more of the world that can be involved, the better. But I do think that even the current format means too many games for the teams going deep into the competition, and this would be even worse. With this in mind, I think there should be a preliminary round, with the top sides somehow entering at a later stage. Similar to the FA Cup I suppose. Not quite sure how it would work, but it’s something that would have to be considered. | |

It would still be 8 games in total for those reaching the Semis (unless they do something very odd with the format), so it wouldn't be any more arduous for the players. It might be more arduous for the viewers though! There would be 96 (NINETY SIX) group matches.

| 2030 World Cup on 09:42 - Jul 13 with 370 views | RIPbobby | If they had any decorum they would make it instant knock out cup and get rid of the group stages. But they won't $$$. | | | |
| 2030 World Cup on 10:49 - Jul 13 with 303 views | Bellevue_Blue | I think I hate 3rd place teams progressing even more than I hate this so I'd probably take it. Qualifying would be a total non-starter though. Maybe they could remove the amount of terrible international breaks somehow. | | | |
| 2030 World Cup on 11:32 - Jul 13 with 251 views | naa | The format would actually be simpler than the current setup - 16 groups, top two through from each. However, hosting the thing would be ridiculous. Every tournament would have to be a similar logistical mess as this one with people flying all over the place, as no single country would be able to host the number of games required. This world cup has been fine but 32 teams worked well. If you are good enough, you'll qualify, small world cups don't exclude smaller teams. | | | |
