I’m personally not sure he stays with that as a flat 4….

What’s more likely then? Playing a 5 with Fatawu or Ouatarra RWB or paying a RCB as a LCB?

I dont love the defence but that's what we've got, that midfield more than holds its own then you go players who can hurt teams up top.

Davis---Greaves---O'Shea---Ouatarra

or

Davis---Greaves---O'Shea---Diop---Fatawu

look like two good options to me.

Admittedly haven't seen Ouatarra there, but he's looked very good to me in his cameos, calm, strong, good positional sense, and I'm betting he could make a good RB or RWB.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

I’m not convinced changing it to a five makes any difference with no midfield support ahead of them. All the goals we’re conceding are because we’re being turned around as teams break through us as we push up or we’re losing individual battles. That won’t change however we set up

We are set up like that, high press nick the ball high, it’s a lot to ask of a midfield double pivot if those 10s get sidestepped isn’t it?

Maybe 3 in the middle might end up being something of an answer, not sure.

Hmmmm… did you not the back 4 actually sorted itself on 00:15 - Sep 5 with 981 viewsunstableblue

Again that first 15mins we were a complete mess.

But when Daragh got them together as a team after the second, we seemed to actually find a shape that was quite robust. Yes were tested two or three times and Leif gave a penalty.

But I think GON in his positive post match (perhaps too positive) was confirming that in that second half we competed to then close the space.

Do you genuinely think the game would have finished 0-0 if we survived the first 10 minutes. No issues with GON being positive, it’s the third game of course, but come on!

Yeah Liverpool really stepped off the gas at 2-0. They were picking us apart with relative ease, I can’t see anyway that ends 0-0.

I was disappointed we weren’t more aggressive, standing off them, where were the niggly fouls and roughing them up a bit. We didn’t look very streetwise, I must say I expected GON to be a little more negative/pragmatic.

Agree we absolutely didn’t disrupt the game enough.

We’ve got a lot of talent that can hurt teams and some very decent (or better) CMs but we are going to have to learn that we can’t go toe to toe in a high press open games as well. Need to make it way more disruptive.

We need to build consistently and understanding. Changes in defense should happen gradually. Part of the problem in our last premiership season was the chopping and changing at the back. Just as one partnership started to show signs of improving it was into the next one.

Only O'Shea played more than 3000 minutes in the last premiership season in our whole squad. For context, only Kipre played less than 3000 out of our starting 4 defenders last season.

O'Shea will likely com out of the RB position at some point and with Ouattara coming in. But we won't be dropping our captain from the team, when Diop is still getting up to speed and we are playing Man Utd and Liverpool. 3 games, including Man Utd and Liverpool, 3 points.

Agree with all of that. We're not at all defensively organised yet, which is somewhat understandable, but I can understand a lot of the positivity because you can see the individual talent we have, and you can also see bits coming together in various parts of the pitch.

Defensive organisation and the CB/DM box is the biggest problem still, but a few signs of improvement in the latter last night.

But some big pluses so far, ahead of my expectations:
Leif - has looked fantastic in every game this season - pace, power, timing, defensively better.
Enciso - makes things happen and scares the opposition.
Fatawu - similar, but not the same.
Emersonn - so impressed with his intelligence, calmness, timing and link up play - at that age and straight in, I think his work is going under the radar a bit - a seriously great prospect.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

Yep. Our big problem 2 years ago was the refusal to change formation in the toughest games. Playing 4 at the back against 4 attackers like Liverpool have was never going to work. Should have been 2 wingbacks and 3 CBs.
IMHO we can play 4 at the back against the mid table teams and below, but we have to respect that there are some fantastic players in the top teams who are just too good to be countered by 1 against 1 - we need a numerical advantage and use pace on the break. Its worked well for Hull. I think Ouattara at RWB is worth a try. Maybe not in the next game at Palace but away to Everton and Citeh.

Where did Ouatarra play at Strasbourg? My understanding when we signed him was that he was a right back with the versatility to cover midfield amongst other positions, but we've only seen him come in to the central midfield so far. I really like the look of him, and given the whole team would seem to work better if we could find another option at right back and let O'Shea go back to the centre then you would think it's a bit of a no brainer to give him a go there.

Extra body in midfield will protect the defence. It doesn’t matter whether you play 4 or 5 at the back (I don’t believe we’ll ever be in control enough to play an actual back 3), if you play 2 in midfield you risk getting overrun and that just puts more pressure on the defence.

We had exactly the same problem 2 years ago and KM didn’t address it. I hope GON doesn’t make the same mistake

We tend to fall into a back 5 or so, when we are under pressure anyway, someone like Maeda fills in and it does not do us any good as we get hemmed in. Our midfield two are neat and progressive players and fill the right areas, are not energetic and they are easy to play around. They press but without the aggressive aim to retrieve the ball as Liverpool did. I am not conviced Lukic and Palacios are a natural pairing, they are playmakers, have similar playing profiles and are a bit lightweight and a bit passive . Good on the ball, not so good off it. But early days and I will hopefully have been proved wrong after a few more games as they learn eachother's and their own roles and the team's needs.
