Apparently government is about to announce over 65's should avoid big gatherings 12:14 - Mar 5 with 5180 views | BrixtonBlue | because of Coronavirus. Is this going to start affecting our crowds? I'm in two minds about whether this is a bit OTT paranoia or sensible advice. My parents have about 6 holidays a year, both are over 65 (Dad is 83) and it doesn't seem to have stopped them doing anything. What does the TWTD hive think?

Apparently government is about to announce over 65's should avoid big gatherings on 12:45 - Mar 5 with 2118 views | StokieBlue | Are you saying that not having Covid19 hasn't stopped them doing anything? I'm sorry but I don't understand what you are asking. What is known is that it's much worse for older people to get covid 19 and that it can be 14 days or more with no symptoms when someone is still contagious and then another few days to test. Basically by the time you have been tested and confirmed as having it you've likely given it to loads of people already. The symptoms lag the infectious stage and the testing lags the symptoms. It's a worst case scenario with regards to that really. SB

Over in the States Trump has managed to blame Obama for the present shortage of testing kits. Because his administration brought in some regulation that private labs had to comply with the authorities that now means testing kits aren't becoming available at the speed they're required or something: As clear as ever he said, "“The Obama administration made a decision on testing that turned out to be very detrimental to what we’re doing, and we undid that decision a few days ago so that the testing can take place in a much more accurate and rapid fashion,” he told reporters during a White House meeting with airline executives, whom he had called to discuss the economic effects of the outbreak. That was a decision we disagreed with,” he said. “I don’t think we would have made it, but for some reason, it was made.” Putting aside also of course that Trump was pretty much denying there was even a problem as recently as a week or two ago. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/04/donald-trump-obama-administration-

Not sure what you're not understanding from my OP. I'm saying the fear of coronavirus hasn't stopped them doing stuff. They're not hiding away and avoiding life. And I'm asking if the government's advice - basically to stay indoors if you're old - is a bit OTT... or in fact sensible? Not sure what your stuff about incubation period has to do with it.

Your opening post doesn't say that - it doesn't mention fear at all. You've mentioned 6 holidays but unless they have took them all in the last 2 months then not really sure what it has to do with Covid 19. Perhaps read your OP again? I've answered whether it's sensible or not - older people are far more susceptible. Given this is probably is quite a reasonable piece of advice. They haven't said stay indoors - your own post says avoid large gatherings - that's quite different. The part on the numbers is to explain that the numbers you see in the press are at least 2 to 3 weeks behind the actual numbers infected. SB [Post edited 5 Mar 2020 13:16]

Trump literally asked his science advisers if they could just use a flu vaccine on covid 19. There is a video of it. The disbelief from the advisers is clearly evident. He's a dangerous clown. SB

You know, just to be sure in case it's not as bad as it sounds, I've just seen the video. It's as bad as it sounds. You take a solid flu vaccine, you don't think that would have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona? How can you be THAT ignorant!?

I don't see why they can't do that - just 'tweak' it a bit. *I'd use the correct scientific jargon, but I like to keep things simple for you lot

I guess I should've explained it more - I thought it was implicit that I was talking about fear not stopping them doing stuff... and with the 6 holidays a year I was saying that's what they generally do and have shown no signs of curtailing it. Surprised you missed all that but oh well. Avoiding large gatherings is surely the thin end of the wedge. Next it will be avoid public transport and so on. My mate is thinking of not coming on Saturday because her dad's going to go if she's going - and she doesn't want him to go because she's worried about the virus. My initial reaction was that's a bit paranoid. But i don't know enough about it so maybe it is actually sensible. I know about the numbers, you've mentioned them a few times on here. They're kind of irrelevant to my point.

Blimey. To be fair to Trump there, he did suggest a solid vaccine and not just any old flu vaccine. How do these people not burst out laughing and shout "Get out of office you half-witted c***"? I mean, it really is like listening to a small kid trying to make sense of the world. And they all sit there with straight faces. Like those photos of Kim Jong's wingmen cosying up as he point out the country's latest world beating computer that we all know is made from papier mache.
