People are still dreadful part 676586564232422 18:05 - Apr 13 with 1689 viewsBlueBadger

Just see someone on FB sharing a 'no more foreign aid after all this ends' picture.
Things are only getting going in the third world with this pandemic and it's going to be a humanitarian disaster if we sit back and do nothing.
Remember back in February when we were all saying 'be kind'?

Britain in “hideously bigoted and selfish” shocker isn’t news though.

I’m surprisingly still encountering such attitudes from those I’d have expected better of.

The person the meme originally comes from is claiming to be a nurse, although amusingly enough she's getting a LOT of grief for it.

Perhaps they were advocating that Britain is stoical and refuses foreign aid when the end of the pandemic sees us having become one of the World's poorer nations?

If we learned one thing in recent years, it’s that Britain will sh1t on it’s own sofa to stop people sitting on it, all whilst blaming the reason they sh1t on someone who helped them do the interior design.

There's some awful stuff on the LBC comments, if you ever have the misfortune of delving into it. There was one post where David Miliband was highlighting the lack of PPE and ventilators available to Sierra Leone.

There were comments about people suggesting birth control in poor countries and suggesting that we shouldn't give them any help because they don't give us any, as if they're as economically prosperous as we are. Utterly vile all of it and makes me lose faith in humanity.

People like Johnson fuel all of this bile. Fair play to that Portuguese nurse who treated him in hospital, only a few months after he'd said that EU migrants had been "treating the UK as if it's their own country" in the election campaign. I hope the PM is ashamed of himself.

It's not Britain. It's [some] people.

I agree with the sentiment about the ignoramus mentioned in the OP but don't make out it's Britain.

Racism, xenophobia, scummy selfish behaviour is not, never has been, and never will be, unique to this country.

I was surprised to meet a nurse not so long back with similar views.

Especially as it was clear that most of her colleagues held the complete opposite views to her.

Funny what people harbour beneath the veneer sometimes.

One I used to work with voted 'leave', proudly announced same on June 24th 2016 and was surprised when an awful lot of her overseas colleagues stopped talking to her.

It is another small nail in the coffin for the argument that there is a God, because He, if He were a thing, would make COVID just be a life threatening condition to those kind of people, wouldn’t he? Or have I missed something?

Agree with that. This country is a lot better than many others in this regard, though there is of course much to be done. If I think how it was when I was growing up in the 70s, the change is profound.

In terms of foreign aid the agreed target is 0.7% GNI. Sweden, Netherlands, Demmark and the UK pay it. The rest of the EU and most others including US, Japan, China don’t bother. After the US, the UK is the biggest contributor in Gross terms so we are not all bad.

Perhaps I spend too long in holes of the internet I shouldn’t for my own sanity, but there’s a lot of people out there who think Tommeh is a national hero and spout racist nonsense.

It went well beyond a small minority not worth bothering with long ago.
