Looks like the USA will have it across the country if Trump gets his way.

He has just effectively fired the Head of Vaccine Development because he wouldn’t push Hydroxycholoquine

Unbelievable.

I assume she will spend all day walking the casinos ensuring she is as close to others as she can possibly be given she doesn't seem to be worried about deaths.

Looking at those numbers on the right of the screen - the United States has something like four percent of the World's population but twenty five percent of the Covid-19 fatalities?

In the official numbers, yes.

However the official numbers are all over the show with various countries looking very dubious in their numbers. China is sticking with just over 3000, Turkey is going for 2000 deaths from 100,000 cases even though the excess deaths in Istanbul alone were more than that for the last few weeks.

Of course, however that link is referring to a different scenario, that was before they started recording. They seem to be recording fairly well now but no country is perfect as you say.

Some are clearly lying though which is a very different thing.

Of course, it's not just local businesses these people are worried about, but also the cities' tax incomes and thus their budgets. Plus they are undoubtedly coming under pressure from political donors (who are also local businessmen) who may be threatening to withold re-election funding in the future.

I think we have to very careful about the narratives that are being spun at the moment. When Cotty made his brief appearance on the forum a week or two ago I had a bit of disagreement with him over the value of a strict statistical approach. My background in accountancy has given me a view on the importance of 'quick and dirty' numbers so that you can at least give some feedback that is current and relevant (but with an awareness that a more detailed analysis should later emerge - unless you are forever throwing out 'quick and dirty' figures in a state of constant firefighting and no one ever has the opportunity for the penny perfect report).

So the Chinese may not be telling the rest of the World the whole story (they may not even know it themselves) but the World Health Organisation cannot lay into them and call them liars and then still expect to have a working relationship. This may also be true for Russia. And having worked in connection with a couple of German companies I know that when it comes to the tax authorities the Germans can be opaque beyond all other nations I have encountered.

So I would exercise caution on all the numbers but I accept that we can have suspicions and follow them as far as reasonable. Just don't let them blinker you and stay aware that the usual suspects may not be the only suspects.

Also to be borne in mind is that Covid-19 seems to strike hardest in nations with more social mobility or in clusters where a tight knit group also have visitors from another infected area. The closed cities of Russia may be an indication of the more general low level of travel around the oblasts and the very low level of international travel of Russians - compared with the Norwegians coming back from winter skiing in Italy, for example. China is somewhat different given the supply of cheap labour that they supply to Japan (weirdly I found in Japan that menus for the Chinese are provided in English) as well as their controlling staff presence on 'One Belt, One Road' but the level of bureaucracy they exercise on those workers probably also allowed them to keep the pandemic monitored.

Lol. He should have known better than to push "proactive efforts to invest early in vaccines and supplies critical to saving American lives".

Not a laughing matter of course, but there's little else you can do when dealing with a crackpot like Trump. I can't say that I find Boris & Trump's pledge to have a coordinated response to Covid-19 particularly reassuring. The US is the last country I'd want to emulate.

Whilst I agree the broad point I am not sure China can be labelled as much different to the west anymore. It has a huge internal transportation system and internal flights second only the the US - there is huge mobility there.

The pandemic seems to be striking densely populated cities fairly hard, China has loads of these and Wuhan itself is very large. Given we known for definite it was circulating in Wuhan since November it doesn't tally with what has been seen in other big cities to cite only 2500 deaths in that city. New York gets that in 1 or 2 days.

I do agree there is a lot of complications around the numbers at the moment though, as per my Turkish example.

I've not said the usual suspects are all to blame but authoritarian governments that rely on internal propaganda often have a very distant relationship with the truth (not that we are much better at the moment). You are right that they do have the ability to control their citizens better than many other countries.

For instance, why would China ban the publishing on all research on the origins of the pandemic?

Sorry, I have to get on with my gardening while the sun shines but let's say I agree on your last sentence. I mean, it's not like the United States has a president who fires people who disagree with him, is it?

That's not really an equivalence though. The US president can't stop academic institutions publishing whatever research they want on whatever subject they choose. He can bad-mouth it afterwards but that's totally different.

That's two equivalences between the US and China you've made which don't seem very fair. Trump is getting to us all though and is acting like a tool - I am sure everyone can agree on that.

Enjoy the gardening!
