Boris pre-empting a further 3 weeks of lockdown has upset Aaron Banks on 14:24 - May 7 with 1442 views | Swansea_Blue | Nice of Banks to incite disobedience and law breaking in the face of a global pandemic! It's fascinating watching BJ trying to deal with this. I don't know whether it's just me imagining things, but I'm sure that since he's come back he's adopting a more cautious approach and is being less bombastic/jingoistic about the crisis. Maybe his experiences have knocked a bit of sense into him. That then brings him into conflict with his headbanger supporters like Banks of course. It's pretty much the same problem previous Tory PMs have had - trying to keep their loon fringe (in party and supporters) happy when reality bites.

But that chart is misleading. Best to look at the number of cases being detected by hospitals to get a true picture.

Even more ironic that the man who tried to dodge a tax bill by recourse to EU law talks about 'no taxes' being raised during a lockdown (which simply isn't true). Oh, and he isn't an economist either. But he does appear to be mistaken about working for norwich Union and Warren Buffett.,

Confirmed cases will probably be skewed by ramping up the testing (and might be skewed again now that testing has dropped well below 100,000 again). Not sure why hospital is a better measure though. Comparing hospital deaths, the UK's trajectory pretty much matches* that of Italy, but lagging by 2-3 weeks and Italy aren't relaxing yet. Given on this measure we're still closer to the peak AND there's close to 10 times as many people dying now than when the lockdown started, it feels like jumping the gun to be doing anything at least for another couple of weeks. *Usual caveats with total numbers of deaths due to differing reporting standards, however the discrepancies are likely to affect the total magnitude of the curves, not the trends. Also the graph is "deaths per million", but the graphs for total deaths are pretty much the same.

Yes, but the football will be better in League One and being beaten 3-0 by a Noriwch team barely out of second gear was much more enjoyable than a hard-fought draw. [Post edited 7 May 2020 15:56]

Indeed. Test more people - get more positive results. It would be handy if the govt were doing some sampling testing - say 1000 random people every day - to get a feel for the actual levels and the trends. Seems like quite a hole in our knowledge from my (amateur) view which given we are not at capacity of testing would now be possible.

Might be. We've overtaken Italy recently by about 20,000 extra people tested per day (they're testing about 40k per day, we're testing about 60k people per day). So it might partly explain why our line isn't dipping as much. It certainly won't be the whole story though as we've got more total cases than some other European countries who've tested far more in total (up to about 3x more for Germany). So our high infection rates aren't all an artifact of the testing regime. This all needs a proper, integrated analysis of all the stats on the different criteria with expert interpretation on top. It'll come as there's hell of a lot of data being collected globally. It'll be keeping people in research papers for years to come.

Testing has been a particular failure of our whole management - with better testing we could have assessed spread and managed risk a lot, lot, LOT better - I had something vaguely virally at the end of March(after an exposure to who subsequently tested positive) - no test and I was back a work after a week, I had no idea still if I was infective an carrying god-knows-what around the place.

They started 10,000 random invites per day to tests on May 4th and have been doing that all week.
