Fantasy Books Top 100 10:40 - Jul 21 with 1323 viewsKeno

Following one from the Sci-fi list a few weeks back Goodreads have a list of 100 top Fantasy books

One obvious omission is the Norwich City 'honours board' but other than that how many of these have you read?

Eight I think, mostly Tolkien but also Stephen King. And I actually read Watership Down - fantasy though? - a couple of months back.

I score 12. My god there is some pap on there- though good to see Le Guin is still popular, and Gaiman very popular it seems.

Jim Butcher is atrocious.

Magician (Feist) should be in the top 5.

Five, but I have to say that it is a pretty trashy list without any Michael Moorcock, Lord Dunsany or William Morris.

Moorcock is over rated imo.

But it is, as the SF one, a populist list rather than a curated one.

Ive actually found the debate around the lists more interesting than the lists themselves and there are a few authors I've noted to take a look at.

As far as that list is concerned I'm on about 9

and I agree about Moorcroft

Like reading Q, it is years since I read any Moorcock but in my late teens (I was going to say I lapped up Moorcock but you know how that would be seen) each new Jerry Cornelius or Prince Corum was eagerly consumed. Might be something to do with author who writes stoned out of his gourd delivers the best material for readers stoned out of their gourd. I started to lose interest with 'Gloriana', which was just when he started to get some literary acclaim...

The lyrics he collaborated with Blue Oyster Cult on 'Cultosaurus Erectus' was an interesting extension to the genre too:

14 exactly the same as I scored for the Sci-Fi list though I would say that I am more of a fantasy nerd than a sci-fi buff.

20.5

I gave up on Kushiel's Dart - thought it was very poor given the hype. Just 50 Shades of Gray for fantasy readers (with all the plot non-depth).

about 10 I think, struggle to remember which books Ive read, but far too many Neil Gaiman books in that list though, he writes some good stuff but its not all good.

and ok ignoring the whole animals can talk and lead remarkably structured lives aspect, is Watership Down really considered a fantasy book ? I mean Beatrix Potter isnt included in that list.

I still have no idea how I managed to finish Lord of the Rings twice. I think I read it a second time because I couldn't quite square the self-indulgent slog I'd read with its billing.

19. Mostly bulked out by the fact that I've read pretty much everything that Neil Gaiman's ever written.
