Covid secure walking / cycling / fishing 16:20 - Nov 6 with 3856 views | bluelagos | Alton water - unlike lockdown 1, has left it's car parks open allowing you to access the paths round the reservoir. Details below: ---------------- Following further guidance, unfortunately fishing boat hire and water sports including sailing and windsurfing access will be closed along with our retail shops (excluding cycling) and mini golf course. We can confirm that our parks will be remaining open during the current lockdown period for access to the tracks, play parks and nature reserves and we will be providing takeaway services from our cafes. Bank fishing will be permitted in line with our current covid safe systems. We are continually reviewing all guidelines and we will update our website of any relevant changes that occur during the weeks ahead. Cycle hire is temporarily closed but will re-open on Tuesday 10th November (pre-booking in advance required). Car parking annual passes are available to purchase by calling 01780 686800 between 10:00am & 3:30pm Thank you to everyone who has respected the new rules we have put in place since we reopened earlier this year. We would like to remind all visitors to continue to adhere to social distancing guidelines during their visits to our parks.

Lets be generous and accept that some people genuinely struggled with anxiety during the lockdown and that manifested itself in some rather bizarre ways. Anyhow Alton water really is a beautiful place to enjoy a walk/cycle for anyone worried about getting lost. Just keep the reservoir on your arm, keep going for 8 miles and you get back to where you started :-)

That's more generosity than they gave me and I think it's fair to say with hindsight I was pretty bang on the money. I might have to cycle somewhere hidden and quiet for a smoke soon :)

Where we are in France, we are only allowed to exercise up to 1km from our home, once per day. (Not forgetting to carry the obligatory form and ID to save receiving a €135 fine).

1 km? That's not much of a ride up and down the same road!

It should probably be like that here as well though (although 1km is too short really). At the moment we have a pseudo-lockdown which doesn't seem to be much of a lockdown at all from what I've seen. It seems to be simply a lockdown of recreational establishments. Either have a lockdown or don't. I don't see how what we have at the moment is really much different to the tiers. Lets see if it's enough in 4 weeks time. SB [Post edited 6 Nov 2020 16:50]

Struggling to see how limiting people to 1km when exercising is any better than what we have at the moment. Someone cycling a 1, 10 or a 100km ride is basically sod all risk to anyone from what I can tell.

I think it needs to be somewhere in between, maybe 5 or 10 miles from your home would be sensible. Doesn't make a lot of sense for hundreds or thousands of Londoners to travel up to Aldeburgh for a walk along the beach, for example.

There’s no justification other than to beat down people’s spirit a little more so they don’t feel the urge to leave the house at all and then find themselves at a shop, gathering or some other ‘risky’ place where they then may spread it. Not only that but how tf are the police going to police it? They have better things they could and should be doing.
Covid secure walking / cycling / fishing on 17:21 - Nov 6 with 2751 views | 26_Paz | Good, I never really got why this sort of stuff was discouraged last time. Surely walking in the forest or along the beach or something is extremely low risk which are far outweighed by the mental and physical health benefits.

I can just about see the argument against allowing people to travel to do their exercise. But the French system is way more draconian than that.

That has always been a major issue with all the lockdown rules, how are they policed/enforced. Far more worrying imho is that only around 20% of those told to self isolate are reported as doing so. That is a far far bigger issue than a few people meeting up with more than 5 other people (last week) or more than 1 person atm. Our government has known about this for weeks (has been reported for a while) yet continues to do sfa to address it from what I can see.

I didn't mean to say we should limit people to 1km - I don't think we should limit the distance at all (unless it's driving 100 miles to have a walk). My point was around the other things he said like such as the permit and fines (although not in response to exercise) and around the general level of lockdown they have in France. I should have been clearer in my response. France are at least having a proper lockdown to try and sort things out - things here seem pretty much normal except the pubs are closed. No problem at all if you want to get your trousers altered, dog washed and trimmed and then buy a Japanese chefs knife (I have shops for all 3 of those open here). SB

No worries. The good news seems to be that the lockdown in Liverpool is showing reductions of CV. So maybe lockdown(V.uk) will prove to be more effective than we fear?

Yes there are but it's not like we don't have many cases. Numbers for today (approximate I am afraid): France: 55000 cases, 363 deaths England: 24000 cases, 355 deaths So they have more but about the same deaths it seems. Germany also nearly at the same cases as us today. SB

Weird how they’ve got double the cases but only a few more deaths. Any idea why?

Afraid not - I've not researched why that could be. The most obvious reason I can think of is that we also have 50000 cases but in reality we aren't picking them up through testing. SB
