How are football players paid? 18:40 - Mar 28 with 1495 viewsbobbyramsey

Obviously a basic wage plus bonuses. But how do they earn the bonuses. Scoring goals, assists, clean sheets? Do the whole team receive a bonus for a goal scored or just the scorer, how about clean sheets, the whole team or just the defensive players? Win bonuses, draw bonuses, money deducted for losing? Do all players have the same opportunity to earn equal amounts in bonuses ( as they should do)? Etc, etc...?

Goals etc are individual.

Clean sheets can be for the keepers and defenders.

Win bonuses are for the whole team although different players may have different £££ for a win.

At the end of the day it is all down to what you can negotiate.

Some are linked to certain targets, so if you scored 15 goals you get another £500k etc.

They also get appearance bonuses. Remember there were a few people moaning when town got fined for fielding a too young and in experience team in the EFL trophy. But it turned out that the appearance bonuses of regular first team players would have been greater than the fine. So town saved money from that.

...a couple of our centre forwards, 2008/09 ish.

They were both on £8,000 a week basic.

Plus £2,000 appearance bonus and £2,000 goal bonus.

Depends what they have negotiated in their contracts with the club.

Remember it is all a big tax dodge for the owners. The more the footballers are paid, the more the owners earn for their other businesses , apparently.

Pfft, Amateurs. The REAL money is to be made by getting relegated to the third division and giving ridiculous contracts to terrible football managers.

The two players I know through friends have confirmed that most players at the club (certainly the ones they socialise with) have NO match bonuses (win or goals scored)

Presume they have promotion increases in their contracts.

The ‘no goal bonus’ explains a lot....

Well if there's not even a win bonus either, no wonder they aren't fussed if they win or not.

Probably not uncommon these days.

They are also the highest paid players in the league.

Good players shouldn't need the bonus.

They get paid to win and score goals anyway, it's their job.

Professional pride, and a competitive nature should also drive them.

"They get paid to win and score goals anyway, it's their job."

That's the problem though really, they're not.

Of course the aim is to win etc, but they're paid to be a footballer, as long as they train and kick the ball about, that's their job done.

Of course pride etc should come into it, but we just seem to have a bunch of footballers with 0 interest in actually winning games of football.
