... imagine any other club paying money for a single one of these players.

The funny thing is I bet they'd go elsewhere and play fine.

I really don't know, man.

People talk about players sustaining career-changing injuries, and coming back a shadow of their former selves (yes, we've had one or two of those recently...)

This lot have sustained a career-changing manager - the Lambert/ Evans relationship might honestly be one of the most negligent relationships I've seen in professional football.

I know what you mean but that seems to be part of our curse.

Players who look rubbish here, then go elsewhere and they play much better.

I was one of those people saying (pre-Cook) the squad isn't that bad, it just needs someone to make them play like an actual team but I was very wrong it seems. The rot has properly set in, so it is somewhat of a blessing that Cook can gut it this summer.

Spin forward to 2027...

"And incredibly, that's the second consecutive Champions League victory for Northampton Town, with their midfield lynchpins of Edwards and Dozzell running the show for them as usual, and Kayden Jackson scoring his 57th goal of the season...."

Yeah, as a team we're just terrible. Everything is so flat and passive. The lack of quality on the ball is shocking at times. We're never invovled in good games of football anymore and haven't been for a while. Struggling to think when we were last invovled in a genuinely decent entertaining game of football. We suck the joy out of the game.

Cook’s going to be on the phone to Mutual Consent FC a lot when the season ends isn’t he? With each game that passes the less and less bothered I become about seeing any of this lot (barring a select few) leaving this summer.

Again though, it’s shown how having a disinterested and football thick owner can feed down to the bottom and we end up with a team too afraid to do anything other than a safely first backwards pass.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Henners, I don't even think there's a select few.

I'd like KVY to stay, in the forlorn hope that an injured ITFC player might, just once, recuperate to their pre-injury form; and Downes, I suppose, for the same reasons....

I couldn't care less about any of the others (kids excepted)

They're an absolutely stinking compost-heap of players.

Ridiculous that you could make the argument that we are actually worse now than under Lambert. I believe Cook is the right man for us but my god what on earth is going on with these players.

KVY and Downes for sure. Dozzell is worth persevering with, maybe Bishop, Woolfenden then other than a debate over keeping Chambers as a club captain that’s it really. Norwood perhaps the one striker to stay.

Agree though Cook needs to clean the rot right out. Ideally Evans goes as well but sadly it seems he’s convinced himself he can magically reverse all the awful decisions he’s made for the past decade or so the stupid git.

Yeah, to be fair that's actually a reasonable list; I'm in a bad mood, and want to watch the world burn this afternoon...

I think that if you drop most of these in a confident team with good habits and patterns, they would do just fine.

Because they are not being dropped into that. The mindset and habits, and the mixture of characters and players is just hopelessly wrong.

McGoldrick is the prime example really.

I think these players are heavily scarred by Lambert. God knows what he’s done to their confidence, relationship with the fans and attitude to the job/company.

Because this is a toxic, unmanageable squad of players with no self-respect or desire to achieve anything for this football club.

I think some of them genuinely think that Cook has nothing to teach them.

Absolutely. I see no lack of effort and trying here. Just a complete absence of confidence, good habits, and quality under pressure.

Not at all. It’s based on 3 seasons in which these players have in various combinations played their parts in a spineless relegation (Wycombe exceeded our 18/19 points total today) and have screwed up 2 successive good starts to a season so that they can embrace 10th place in League One with greater fervour than they have embraced 1st to 6th place.

It says a lot that the only period since November when the team thrived was when a coach was briefly calling the shots. As soon as a manager has retaken the reins, they’ve gone back to “just about enough”. Pick up the pay cheque and laugh in the fans’ faces. They’ll be out of there by the time fans are back in numbers, They’ve played us for suckers over 3 years now. And when they come back with their new clubs, they’ll deserve nothing but derision from us.

You don't think they'd rather be banging in goals, playing brilliant football and dominating the league and thereby progressing their own careers, either via much better contracts here or transfers up the divisions?

The more logical explanation is just that they aren't capable of more, isn't it?

We are at the point where some of these players should be busting a gut to persuade managers to take them on a contract next season. Even those in contract should be trying to persuade the manager they are worth a first team place beyond the summer.

They seem incapable of it.
