Not sure why the Star is carrying this sort of Party Political Broadcast but I can't say I'm surprised. Nor am I sure why a local rag is covering Scottish affairs, other than to stir the pot. Can't say I'm surprised at them for doing that either. They haven't been a serious news source for a decade or more.
Interesting to take note of Hunt's rhetoric. When people disagree with his stance, like the local community who clearly came in solidarity with their two neighbours, they're labeled activists, but when people are being invoked in support of his barely concealed racist ranting they're the General Public. These people aren't even attempting o hide their divisive tactics anymore.
Clearly the 'General Public' in Pollokshields disagree with him though. They're the wrong kind of general public though I guess.
One final thought, don't read the comments under that article. They paint an appalling picture of the town's residents. |  |

Seems to be working though. He's got his gullible supporters in the comments blaming Labour for immigration policies when it's been his party in power for God knows how many years. The only criticism aimed at the Conservatives from them is that they aren't being tough enough!
It's quite possible he's trying to suggest that IBC have some kind of control over British immigration policies of course, and he is dumb enough to actually think that, to be fair. [Post edited 21 May 2021 13:23]

Hunt plays the race card often to appeal to his core support - often he states that’s asylum seekers etc have to be returned to the first safe country that they enter. This is totally incorrect. Does he know this? Of course he goes but he plays the same hand as it’ll win him votes. This makes him, in my opinion, little worse than the Britain First lot who use similar themes but less subtle in their approach.
In this county, over the past twenty years, Race relations have deteriorated in this country and it’s due to the fear that people like Hunt play on to stroke up racism and xenophobia.
And, anyone who voted for Brexit is also guilty of this - yeah, I know this isn’t what you voted for, well it’s a result of it so take full responsibility for it.
Not long ago, in the grand scheme of things I thought that racism was slowly being eradicated but the last few years has seen it rest it’s ugly head and spitting out it’s hate. Something Hunt and the Tory parliamentary party seem to revel in.
I know that not all Tories think like Hunt does but a lot of Boris’s supporters do.
On a very personal level, I have two young kids, mixed race like me but a lot more ‘English’ looking in fact they both look white. I’m glad, very glad, as they probably won’t know what it feels like to have racist idiots throw their insults over the street etc. I’m very very worried about the direction in which this country is going.

No need to apologise Matt. These are very real and serious things you're talking about. The fact that you feel glad that your kids can 'pass as white' is an awful, but completely understandable, thing to have to acknowledge. I too worry about the direction the country is heading in. Too many people seem to have such low levels of empathy and kindness to anyone who isn't like them.
And while you may be right - I know that not all Tories think like Hunt does - they are doing an appalling job at pushing back against this type of narrative. To be honest, there comes a point where silence starts to sound a lot like quiet agreement and endorsement. | |

Maybe 1) you and I just don't know enough of the 'right' people (can't say I'm actually sad about that), or 2) perhaps enough people are so unengaged with politics that it's just a habit to put the cross in the Blue/Red box and not stop to think about who or what they are voting for.
I'd prefer option 2 to be honest, as I don't want to think that Ipswich is swamped with small minded, racist, knuckledraggers.

I don’t think it is. Hunt wasn’t voted in for any other reason than he was the Tory party candidate and we were in the final stages of Brexit. I doubt most Ipswich people have any interest in his culture war bollÅcks and immigration is very low down on their list of priorities.
